High Holme Reviews

Oliver
We really needed a break to unwind and rechargeand High Holme was perfect for that. It felt just like home but with all the modern comforts. The gardens are stunning and our two dogs had a fantastic time exploring. We enjoyed dining out at the Strand Inn initially, but later found ordering online from Morrisons and Asda was cheaper than eating out every night. The house was lovely and peaceful - we’re definitely planning to return to High Holme!

We had such a lovely stay at this cosy cottage! The host was genuinely warm and gave great tips, which made everything so easy. The views at night were absolutely stunning, perfect for stargazing. There are plenty of hiking trails nearby, so exploring the mountains was a breeze. The garden was a perfect spot to unwind after a day out. Overall, it’s a comfy retreat I’d definitely recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway!
Emma
We really enjoyed our time here! The house had all we needed and was tucked away in a stunning spot. The weather was on our side, which was a bonus. The hot tub was perfect for unwinding after watching the kids kick a ball around in the big garden. Definitely recommend the Sunday roast at the Strands Inn, it was fantastic and just a short walk.
Emma

The cottage was perfect for our family getaway - lots of room and stunning views. It’s quite peaceful and secluded, which we loved. Having a pub nearby for meals was a real bonus. Definitely good value for money!

We had a lovely weekend at High Holme. There was plenty of space for our group of seven and our dog-so peaceful with breathtaking views. The house was really comfyand the modern kitchen and bathrooms were a bonus. The bedrooms felt a bit dated, but the beds were super cosy and clean. Heating was a bit quirky, but with all the plug-in heaters, we managed fine. Sadly, the garden was flooded, so no outdoor hangout, but the hot tub was definitely a highlight. The games room kept the kids entertainedand the welcome goodies were a nice touch. We’d come back!
Emma

We recently stayed at High Holme and honestly, it was fantastic. The house had everything we neededand the views were absolutely breathtaking. The rooms were spacious enough for our group of 8, including 2 dogs, which was perfect. We loved relaxing in the hot tub and making good use of the games room. The location was ideal, with a pub and shop just a short walk away, plus plenty of lovely walks and attractions nearby. The telescope was a nice touch, even if the weather didn’t cooperate. We’d definitely recommend it!
Emma Carter
We loved the location, Nether Wasdale really is a good place nestled in such a beautiful valley. The house sits on a lovely elevated spot with stunning views towards Ill Gill. During the hot days, it did get quite warm inside since only a few windows open, so maybe a fan or two would help. The garden was perfect for the kids and dogs to relaxand we spent plenty of time unwinding in the hot tub. Just a heads up, The Screes pub hasn't reopened after Covid, so plan accordingly!
Martin
We loved the stunning gardens and amazing views, plus the hot tub was the perfect touch for our family gathering!

We had a fantastic weekend at the cottage! Plenty of space for our family get-together, with 6 adults and three little onesand still lots of room to spare. It’s great that dogs are welcome too, that’s a real bonus. The place is super well-equippedand the gardens are really pretty. We enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub after the rain stopped - such a treat! The location is spot on, with a couple of pubs nearby, although only one was open. Beautiful spot-definitely recommend for a peaceful break!
Laura

Emma
Beautiful place, loved the local pubs and scenic walks. Definitely a holiday we’d recommend to everyone!
James
Honestly, the photos on the site looked amazingand the place exceeded our expectations! Not long after we arrived, the owner gave us a ring with some great tips about the area, like where to eat and fun things to do, which was really thoughtful. They even left us a lovely basket of goodies, which was a lovely touch. We’d done our research and knew it’s always booked up, so we went ahead and rebooked for next year while we were still there-absolutely perfect! Couldn’t recommend it enough.
Emma
The cottage was fantastic! We’d love to come back but keep struggling to find an available date. The price is fairand the location is perfect for exploring and walking around the beautiful area.
Pauline

Rydal Mount & Gardens are wonderfully situated between Lake Windermere and Rydal Water offering breathtaking scenery. The home of William Wordsworth from 1813 - 1850 the grand home is now lived in by the poets descendents but parts of the house and grounds are open to the public. Why not take a guided tour and see the rooms where many of the famous poems were written. The gardens are beautiful at all times of the year but in the summer offer a spectacular display of colour. Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD
about 18 Miles
We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
Ullswater Steamers - CA11 0US
about 18 Miles
This is an award winning Lake District attraction and they have been operating cruisers on Lake Ullswater for over 150 years.  There is no better way to explore the lakes than on water and you could even combine a cruise with a spectacular walk.  For great days out in this region then this attraction is highly recommended and will appeal to couples as well as families.  Corporate groups are also well catered for.
South Lakes Safari Zoo - LA12 0LU
about 18 Miles

This is an amazing Cumbria attraction well known locally as well as nationally for how close you can get to the animals.  Described as the most interactive animal park in Europe it's well worth a visit if you are staying in the area.  Open from April to end October some of the highlights are the tigers, penguins, bears, hippos and rhinos.  At 2pm during certain seasons it's feeding time so don't forget to plan your day around this so you can watch the animals enjoying their feed.  Look out for seasonal events such as Halloween Zoo Boo (free entry for kids in fancy dress) and The Magic of Christmas.

Lakeland Wildlife Oasis - LA6 1JH
about 28 Miles
Located in the Milnthorpe area of Cumbria we love this local attraction.  With an eclectic mix of fascinating wildlife and hands on displays this centre is educational as well as fun.  You can wander around at leisure admiring the exhibits which range from chameleons to computers. Some of the most threatened species are kept at the park as part if international breeding programmes.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs which are great value for money.  There are discounts for pre-booked parties of 12 or more.
