The Retreat was a spotlessly clean. warm and welcoming. The owners have really thought of everything and clearly work very hard to ensure all needs are well catered for. The Retreat is exactly that. A fabulous property, beautifully presented, spotlessly clean and exceptionally relaxing. If you're looking for somewhere to fully switch off and relax, this is a must. Only 15 minutes walk to the Solway Firth and a 40 minute drive into the heart of the Lake District. (Views to Blencathra and Northern Lakes from the bedr oom) The owners Stephen and Lindsay make this a true home from home and whilst available at any time remain discreet throughout. Highly recommended.

We loved it, it felt like home from home, it was comfortable, spacious for the kids , a little hide out my grandkids enjoyed, even the parents. It is a place I would go back to, and I recommend it. It will be fun in summer, we enjoyed it, even in the winter.
Jane
One of the most impressive things that did it for me was the welcome and friendliness of the hosts. I have stayed in many places over the years but this scores the best i have ever seen, truly memorable. Its a business transaction to rent out their lovely place, but really didn't feel like this, the personal welcome, and personal touches throughout the home decorated with love shone through our stay daily, one of the best holidays we have ever had.
Nigel
Lindsay and Steven are the most outstanding hosts I have ever dealt with. Attention to detail , excellent communication and generosity of provisions /extras to ensure you have a great time is incredible. The property is beautiful and the fittings are to a very high standard. Christmas decorations were really first class!! Local area looks beautiful although we were so content we didnt leave the property much! We did get to the local pub which was very welcoming with good food.
Barbara
The only thing you need is clothes - everything else has been thought of. Washer and dryer in the utility room so you don't need to bring the whole wardrobe. Lovely welcome treats, so you can make a brew or even a glass of wine with the delicious scones on arrival. Games room especially for the kids (of all ages). Two large TV's downstairs so no fi ghting over the remote. Great garden with wildlife section and bug hotel, plus lawned area with play equipment. Can't fault it.
Berkley
The best cottage we have ever stayed at without a doubt
Marek

Catherine
Property layout was great. Lovely large open plan kitchen/dinning/sitting area that opened up to the outdoor seating area & hot tub. Kitchen was fully equipped. A lot of thought going into everything you'd need. All bedrooms were very comfortable. Fantastic couple of bathrooms with great showers.
Cheryl
The Retreat really is the best treat ever. This cottage has everything you can possibly need. It has the best selection of equipment, towels etc, you need nothing. Lindsay and Steve have thought of everything. I cannot think of one negative comment to make. A lovely selection of basics available so no need to worry about a tea/coffee when you arriv e. Even a cheeky alcoholic drink if needed. The local pub is literally a 2 minute walk up the road. Just amazing.
Kathleen
A warm welcome from the owners to their outstanding holiday home in a lovely location, where they have carefully and thoughtfully paid so much attention to detail, both inside and outside the property, which is beautifully furnished and very well equipped.

Lorraine
The Retreat is a perfect escape located in a lovely quiet village with wonderful friendly locals to make you feel most welcome. The cottage itself is idyllic. It has all mod cons and everything a family of all ages and sizes could possibly need. The garden /kitchen room is just perfect for families. Lindsay and Steven are perfect hosts even bringin g fans for us during a heatwave without asking. They really think about their guests. Perfect holiday. Cant recommend enough. Thank you.
Melanie
Beautiful holiday home, tastefully decorated to a high standard, immaculately clean throughout. The kitchen had all the kitchenware and small appliances anyone could ever need. The 4 double bedrooms were generous with extremely comfy beds and beautiful decor. The large, modern bathroom had a gorgeous bath & shower. Outside, the garden had a play ar ea and hot tub, with a BBQ available to use. It really does seem like the owners thought of everything. I cant fault this at all. We all had fun x
Edward
Most beautiful property, every need catered for and so thoughtfully presented. Lovely hosts, welcoming locals in village, kids young and old will have plenty to do as do dogs. Welcome basket a real treat. So sorry to go home! Best holiday home we have ever stayed in !
Joanne
We are a family of adults aged between 65 & 29 years old. The owners went the extra mile to ensure we were comfortable and well catered for, the attention to detail was outstanding, even providing fresh flowers, scones with jam/cream, cake, tea, coffee, wine, beer, bread and butter. It was immaculately clean throughout the entire property, with suc h comfortable beds. The location was so peaceful, the hot tub and outside area was fantastic, our dog loved playing outside, it was was very safe.
John
The Retreat is just about the perfect place to kick back and relax in the wonderful Cumbrian countryside, its located in a the lovely little village within a short walk to the seaside, surrounded by fields and meadows with some great walks and for me fabulous cycle tracks that can take either up or down the coast to the many town that are dotted al ong way, it is quite isolated with just the community pub but that just adds to its charm, and larger amenities are just a short drive away if needed
Kirsty
The house was absolutely faultless, the owners done literally everything to make sure we had everything we needed. Immaculate property. Unfortunately the pub nearby is only open over the weekend and anywhere half decent to eat was a decent drive away. The quality of the food locally was disappointing, this is a major contributory factor for me on h oliday. The beach isn't what I am used to its quite a sad looking place not the joyful bright beautiful scenery you get in Northumberland.
Kelly
A beautiful, well equipped and lovingly completed holiday home. Absolutely nothing has been forgotten and there are so many extra touches Ive not seen in other holiday homes it was just fantastic. Such a relaxing place with superb facilities from the house itself to the hot tub and garden. Lovely owners where nothing was too much trouble. Absolutel y bliss!

Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD
about 11 Miles
We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
Mabie Farm Park - DG2 8EZ
about 17 Miles
Mabie Farm Park is a firm favourite. Ideal for families with younger children ,this family oriented farm park has lots of animals to meet and also offers Donkey Rides, Paddle Boats and Slides as well as Trampolines and Bouncy Castles. Kids can run around on the Soft Play Area while mum and dad relax in the Tea Room. There is also a Farm Shop onsite selling toys, gifts and fresh local produce including cakes and jams. Seasonal activities can also be enjoyed including a spookly tea and walk on Haloween. The Farm closes for the winter on October 31st.
Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery - CA3 8TP
about 20 Miles
This is a museum and art gallery in one and will suit those looking for an educational and cultural day out.  You can explore the fantastic art collection including Fine Art, Decorative Art and Textiles.  If you love nature then this aspect of Tullie House will appeal. The museum holds large and important collections of zoological, botanical and geological material. And for lovers of history there is plenty to wet your appetite here. Tullie House collects a wide range of historic materials including objects, ephemera (printed material), photographs and associated information files.  We think this museum and art gallery are excellent value for money as well.
Castle Douglas - DG7 1TJ
about 22 Miles
We also recommend a visit to Castle Douglas and the Treasure Hunt Treasure Trails. These treasure hunts are great fun for the whole family and are an entertaining way to explore a new town or village. Children will enjoy solving the clues whilst learning about the history of the area. The walking trail is suitable for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs so no one is left out of the fun.
Ullswater Steamers - CA11 0US
about 26 Miles
This is an award winning Lake District attraction and they have been operating cruisers on Lake Ullswater for over 150 years.  There is no better way to explore the lakes than on water and you could even combine a cruise with a spectacular walk.  For great days out in this region then this attraction is highly recommended and will appeal to couples as well as families.  Corporate groups are also well catered for.
