About The Old Guard House

The Old Guard House has been carefully restored and converted into a luxury 5-bedroom holiday home over the last 18 months. The original building has been furnished in the style of the 1940s with traditional wallpaper, vintage furniture, and wall art displaying WWII British propaganda and governmental advice.

The west-facing upper balcony has also been restored, allowing guests to enjoy a view of the farmland and coastal bays that run along this sensational coast. An extension in same style as the original building has also been added in order to take full advantage of the location.

This contains the kitchen/living area, which has been designed for maximum comfort and lounging opportunities! Equipped with a multifuel burner, large TV and huge squishy sofas this is the ‘mess room’ of the house.

Glass doors take up almost one entire wall and provide spectacular sea views. These lead out to the private garden and patio, while discreet hedging and fencing alongside the property offer complete privacy to our guests.

The Old Guard House was originally developed in 1941 as an Army station to detect enemy ships approaching Britain by sea in WWII. In 1942, it was transferred to the control of the RAF, becoming RAF Goldsborough.

It was part of the ‘Chain Home Low’ radar warning system that was developed to detect low flying aircraft used by German forces. In 1951, RAF Goldsborough was upgraded with an enormous underground bunker, in addition to The Old Guardhouse.

In 1958, the bunker was destroyed by a severe fire and was no longer fit for purpose. In 2004, another fire destroyed much of the Guardhouse leaving it badly damaged, roofless, and abandoned until 2022 when restoration work on The Old Guard House began.

Fun-filled adventures await you at The Old Guard House.

The Old Guard House Reviews

William
We has a fab stay at the the Old guard house. So much so we didn't want to come home. It was well catered for with glasses and kitchen ware . We was very pleased with the house.
Excellent accommodation. Perfect base for meeting up of old friends from around the country. Very comfortable and spacious.
Excellent accommodation for our family of ten ranging from 3 years to 94 years, plus 2 small dogs. Car is essential. Local inns etc., are friendly and food is good.
A stunning house beautifully furnished. We were a family of 10 spanning 3 generations and there was plenty of space for everyone. The house was very well equipped, with everything we needed in the kitchen and the bathrooms. The welcome treats of tea, biscuits and cakes were a lovely gesture. The hot tub was great and the sun loungers were perfect for star gazing at night. We saw shooting stars. The location is also brilliant, close to Whitby, Staithes and Robin Hood's Bay. Will highly recommend this house.
4pm entry and 10am leave are ridiculous. We lost the first day and cant even have breakfast on the last day as the dishwasher had to be clean and empty when we left. ALL the showers were rainfall showers there were no shower caps so noone with long hair could have a shower. The price is astronomical 2k considering we only had 2 full days there.

Beautiful place, absolutely would stay again my one and only fault is that ... Beautiful place, absolutely would stay again my one and only fault is that its not very well sign posted for and the postcode given for the property isnt helpful really, many of our party got lost as it was more out of the way, but other than that, utterly amazing
Stayed here with family and extended family and had a wonderful stay. The house was lovely and clean, spacious and the hot tub was a great addition. Beautiful views of the sea all round and enjoyed being able to see the boats, and close to different villageslittle beaches. Had a day out in Robin Hoods Bay I definitely recommend a visit there. Thanks for a great stay!

The Grainary Wildlife Farm - YO25 3HS
about 13 Miles
Located in Harwood Dale Village, North Yorkshire we think this attraction makes a superb family day out and couples will also enjoy the nature walks in the area.  There are 6 nature walks in total surrounding the farm so walkers and lovers of the outdoors will be in their element. Some of our favourite walks include the Spring Flowers, Pond and Village walk which takes around 35 minutes, and the Meadow and Trees walk which takes one hour.
Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary - YO12 6RP
about 19 Miles
If you are enjoying a lodge break in the Yorkshire Moors and Coast then a day trip to the Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary highly recommended. This centre is one of the regions most popular attractions and is educational as well as fun. Visitors will enjoy a journey beneath the waves, meeting many strange, beautiful and fascinating creatures of the deep. As well as mighty sharks and beautiful rays guests can get up close to some more common creatures including star fish and can also meet the otters, seals and penguins at feeding time. The site also has children's play area and picnic tables as well as a restaurant and souvenir shop. Family tickets cost £46.80 but the Tourist Information Centres in Scarborough, Whitby or Filey often offer fantastic discounts.
Sea Life Marine Sanctuary - YO12 6RP
about 19 Miles
Located in the Scalby Mills area of Scarborough this makes a fun family day out for those who are interested in marine life. The fantastic ocean tank is well worth seeing - it's been transformed into a Turtle Reef and you can see an amazing array of colourful reef fish and coral. You may also catch a glimpse of the tropical sharks and turtles. Offering good value for money this is a day out with a difference and an all weather attraction.
Peasholm Park - YO12 6QQ
about 19 Miles
This attraction is ideal for sunny days as the beautiful park is ideal for wandering out and taking in the scenery.  You can hire boats including rowing boats and canoes to enjoy the views from the water.  The pedalos with the dragon heads are always a popular choice too. Look out for special events including the Battle of Peasholm Park Naval Battle which has been described as a "must see".  You can also take a ride on the North Bay Railway which will delight children.
Betton Farm Visitor Centre - TF9 3PS
about 20 Miles
Betton Farm Visitor Centre is the ideal attraction close to the North Yorkshire coastal town of Scarborough. This animal farm has all the cute farm animals you would expect to see and will appeal to younger children especially.  A great place to both play and learn we think the Betton Farm Visitor centre is great value for money.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs.  Some of the highlights of the day might include meeting Sofie the Shetland Pony and Henry the goat, as well as the pot bellied pigs called Porky and Hammy.
Flamingo Land - YO60 7EW
about 21 Miles
Situated in Malton in North Yorkshire this has to be one of our favourite family days out.  It's a theme park and zoo all in one stretching over a massive 400 acres. With thrilling rides for the very daring like Cliff Hanger, Corkscrew and Kumali, there are also more gentle rides for the little ones such as Frog Hopper and Helitoys.  Family fun attractions include the 4D cinema, the lost river ride and the Little Monsters Den of Mischief. Check out their website for seasonal events which take place throughout the year and you can also gain more information about the zoo.  Flamingo Land is a resort as well as a theme park so you can also book accommodation there.
Castle Howard - YO60 7DA
about 28 Miles
Castle Howard is one of the regions most beautiful and historic landmarks and is located in 1,000 acres of parkland with breathtaking gardens to explore. As well as exploring the castle visitors can enjoy attractios including the unique Land Train - the best way to see the entire park. There is also a large lake offering boat trips during the summer months. In high season the site is very popular with families and offers organised activities for children including tours, talks, crafting and animal encounters. The site also has a Nature Trail which is fun for the whole family and an Adventure Playground where children can run off some energy.
Yorkshire Lavender - YO60 6PB
about 28 Miles
Yorkshire Lavender is an amazing award winning attraction offering breathtaking panoramic views of York, a Café, Plant Nursery and Lavender Gardens. The 60 acre site is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and is an excellent choice for a day trip. The onsite shops sells Lavender products such as bath and body treats, skincare, medicine and herbal remedies.
