About Shepherds Cottage

This single-storey barn conversion is situated on a working livestock farm, just under a mile from the picturesque village of Hawkshead and six miles from Ambleside. With spectacular views over the fields to the pretty Esthwaite Water, Shepherds Cottage is a firm favourite for couples or families at any time of the year.

Enter this welcoming cottage and you will find a real gem as you discover the light and airy open-plan living area, which has feature beams and a delightful sitting area with tasteful fabric sofas, alongside a contemporary kitchen. Single-storey, Shepherds Cottage is just a short stroll at bedtime to reach the two bedrooms and the opulent shower room, where you will find many extra touches such as robes, slippers and toiletries, which have been generously supplied by the owner to ensure that your stay is nothing less than perfect.

Outside, at the rear of the cottage, is a lovely patio area with your very own private hot tub, perfect for relaxing after a hard day's walking, whilst at the front is another patio which boasts fantastic views down to Esthwaite Water; an ideal spot to sit back and enjoy the peaceful and tranquil landscape. Esthwaite Water has been known to be frequented by osprey that have no doubt been attracted by the pike and trout in the lake, as are fishermen who can fish on the lake by arrangement with the owner.

Just a short stroll will take you into the charming village of Hawkshead with its colourful mix of quaint, cobbled yards, whitewashed cottages and interesting shops and cafes to explore. The Grizedale Forest is on the doorstep and the Visitor Centre with the tree top adventure course a stone’s throw away.

Shepherds Cottage Reviews

We had a brilliant week here and would love to come back again. The location is perfect we visited in February half term and it was a perfect mix of enough things going on in Hawkshead to keep us busy, but not overwhelmingly busy like other areas such as Bowness. The property was beautiful, we couldn't have asked for a better base. I also owe a big thank you to the hosts who saved us one evening when the Tooth fairy made an unexpected visit and we were out of change! Thank you again!
We had an absolutely amazing week for our honeymoon and everything was there that we needed. It was cosy and clean and the hot tub was an extra special bonus! Thank you for a week we will remember and we hope to return in the future!
Tracey
This was a beautiful cottage, hosted by a beautiful family, from the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome. We were stuck in the blizzard that occurred over the weekend and the family at Howe farm went above and beyond to help us out, we cannot thank them enough. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean, very comfortable and had everything you need in the kitchen, it was a perfect break and weve already said we would go back there.
Absolutely loved our stay in a lovely and comfortable cottage in a stunning location. The owners have put so much thought into making the cottage feel like a home away from home and everything thats provided is such good quality. We will definitely return!
Absolutely amazed at the care and attention taken to this cottage.
Great hosts nothing was any trouble fab break
Every comfort taken care of. Wish them well for their future

Friendly hosts, with excellent knowledge of the local area. Wonderful to see the awesome work going on around the farm. We will be back for another visit. xx

Rydal Mount & Gardens - LA22 9LU
about 5 Miles
Rydal Mount & Gardens are wonderfully situated between Lake Windermere and Rydal Water offering breathtaking scenery. The home of William Wordsworth from 1813 - 1850 the grand home is now lived in by the poets descendents but parts of the house and grounds are open to the public. Why not take a guided tour and see the rooms where many of the famous poems were written. The gardens are beautiful at all times of the year but in the summer offer a spectacular display of colour. There is also a gallery and a tearoom. Discounts are available for group bookings.
Ullswater Steamers - CA11 0US
about 12 Miles
This is an award winning Lake District attraction and they have been operating cruisers on Lake Ullswater for over 150 years.  There is no better way to explore the lakes than on water and you could even combine a cruise with a spectacular walk.  For great days out in this region then this attraction is highly recommended and will appeal to couples as well as families.  Corporate groups are also well catered for.
South Lakes Safari Zoo - LA12 0LU
about 15 Miles

This is an amazing Cumbria attraction well known locally as well as nationally for how close you can get to the animals.  Described as the most interactive animal park in Europe it's well worth a visit if you are staying in the area.  Open from April to end October some of the highlights are the tigers, penguins, bears, hippos and rhinos.  At 2pm during certain seasons it's feeding time so don't forget to plan your day around this so you can watch the animals enjoying their feed.  Look out for seasonal events such as Halloween Zoo Boo (free entry for kids in fancy dress) and The Magic of Christmas.

Lakeland Wildlife Oasis - LA6 1JH
about 15 Miles
Located in the Milnthorpe area of Cumbria we love this local attraction.  With an eclectic mix of fascinating wildlife and hands on displays this centre is educational as well as fun.  You can wander around at leisure admiring the exhibits which range from chameleons to computers. Some of the most threatened species are kept at the park as part if international breeding programmes.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs which are great value for money.  There are discounts for pre-booked parties of 12 or more.
Happy Mount Park - LA4 5AQ
about 20 Miles
Happy Mount Park has attractions for the whole family including several play areas, a miniature railway, crazy golf, putting green and trampolines, there is also a paddling pool where the little ones can splash around in the summer and a café where the adults can relax with a drink. During the summer months and especially during school holidays live music can often be enjoyed.
Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD
about 23 Miles
We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
