The Gatehouse Reviews

What a fantastic place. We have never seen such a well thought out house in such a beautiful surrounding. It was comfortable and cosy whilst also being modern. The rooms are all decorated to a high standard and furnished beautifully. We had a family celebration and the kitchen had absolutely everything we needed to put on a large buffet. What a great selection ovenware, pans, crockery and glasses. First class. All Beds were comfy, the bathrooms offered shower gel, shampoo and conditioner and the rain shower was excellent. Those that used the hot tub enjoyed it. The welcome pack was greatly received by both us and our dogs. Thanks go to Jennie who was an excellent host. Highly recommend this holiday location.
This property was superb. It met all our expectations and the boys particularly loved the games room. It was spotlessly clean and the information provided by the owners was excellent. It was easy to get to lots of places of interest, which we certainly did. It was perfectly safe to let the dogs play in the enclosed garden and they loved it , as well as all the lovely walks around the village. The only negative was no Sky tv and we do all love our football so we did miss that but we managed for a week
Kirsten
A wonderful property and a lovely relaxing stay! Communication was great from the owner and the additional directions were very clear and we had no issues finding the property even though it's tucked away. Lots to keep you entertained at both the property and many activities within a 30 minute drive such as Sherwood Forest, Sherwood Pines and Matlock Bath was a great day out for us all. Would highly reccommend for a great family break!
This was a lovely break. Everything was as we expected and even better. I was not sure what to totally expect as we sometimes struggle to find local evening walks for our dog in some places. There were also plenty of walks locally to keep him entertained as well as places to visit within short driving distances. We would definitely go back there again. The pub that was within a short walk was OK to visit with our dog, though they're only allowed in the beer garden.
The house was perfect in a stunning area.
What a fantastic house ! This property has everything going for it super clean, lovely rooms, fully equipped had everything that you could need in the kitchen including the garlic crusher ! Loads of board games we left a couple in the cupboard to add to the collection. Honestly the property was A one !!
Christine
Brilliant weekend, the property certainly has the wow factor on entering. Everything clean and tidy and lots of accessibly cutlery and crockery. Really good information pack. Extra loo downstairs which we werent aware of which was a bonus given that there was only one en suite and house bathroom which our guests all managed with, so no complaints. Great outside space with hot tub. We will certainly be recommending this beautiful venue. To avoid the windy country lane with passing places. I would suggest you drive a bit further down the M1 to junction after Tibshelf service station. Otherwise its fine really.
Beautiful cottage. Well equipped the best ever and maintained to a very high standard. The owner is both extremely helpful and so accommodating. We were 3 generations plus a dog and all of us had a great time. Peaceful location and there are lovely walks from the cottage always a bonus. Enjoyed a lovely Sunday roast at the dogfriendly Hilcote Arms, a short drive away, and a delicious evening meal at The Carnarvon Arms, which had a good choice of GF options.
A pleasant stay in a lovely cottage. It was a perfect size for our party of 6 adults, 2 babies and 2 dogs. The owner Jennie was very nice and helpful. Few minor issues, a few garden chairs were breaking and needed replacing and no door latch on the downstairs bedroom wasn't ideal. However nothing to spoil our stay. Thanks
Chiara
Absolutely fantastic stay again! tha property is like a home away from home in that it has everything you could need, and whilst other places I have stayed only have enough glasses and crockery for the number of people staying The Gatehouse has an abundance meaning we didnt have to always stay on top of the washing up! The folder providing info on local places to visit or eatdrink is fantastic. Our party had another fantastic stay, and are already talking about a return visit
What an amazing stay in the gatehouse! !!! Everything was perfect, the location was also perfect, the property was very well equipped everything you needed, the beds were very comfortable and rooms were spotless, lovely garden area with a hot tub which was lovely to relax in after walks on the nearby trails, will definitely be back
Vanessa
A delightful property which exceeded our already high expectations. Everything about the house was lovely. It was clean, spacious, well equipped and had a lovely welcoming feel to it. My children loved the games room where they spent time playing with the numerous games in there. The hot tub was also a big hit with us all. The enclosed garden was perfect for our dog and also for the children to play in. They especially enjoyed the table tennis. There are lots of lovely walks within easy reach and it is a lovely area to explore in general. We had a fantastic day out at the nearby Go Ape in Sherwood Forest. Thank you to Jennie, the owner who had great communication and was extremely helpful. Hopefully we will be back sometime soon for another visit.
Lovely property. Lots to entertain our 7 year old with the games rooms and outdoor activities. Well maintained, very clean, well stocked for crockery utensils etc. Very nice rooms with comfy beds.
Jennie & Ian are fantastic hosts. Very friendly and personable. Nothing is too much trouble for them. We felt well looked after and catered for. They went above and beyond for us. The Gate House is a fabulous place to stay to recharge your batteries. Beautiful surroundings. Very interesting history. Inside it has everything you would ever need plus more! Beds & sofas comfortable. Linens, fixtures, fittings, all high quality. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. Well stocked kitchen and lovely welcome basket of biscuits & Prosecco! Lots of spare items available such as batteries, plug charger and more. All the type of things you might forget to take away but would have in your own home. The clothes airers were great for towels after the hot tub. All of the cushions and throws in bedrooms and living areas were freshly washed for our stay. The underfloor heating was fab on bare feet! Hot tub brilliant and Jennie popped by to check the chemicals and top up during the week and did let us know first. As a family we had lots of fun in the games room. Karaoke, Air Hockey, Arcade Golf, Table Football plus other bits in the 'Hayloft'. Also board games and cards etc downstairs in living room with a massive coffee table to play them on! Property was secure all round. Outside in the glorious back garden alongside a prestigious hot tub was badminton, a BBQ stand, a lovely chairs and table, a pung pong table and plenty of accompanying bats, balls etc. On the doorstep a tranquil stroll through old church grounds and shops etc all a short car journey away. Being located in the middle of the UK map, it is an ideal location to visit lots of places such as Matlock Bath, Chesterfield, Nottingham and more. There was a really helpful guide folder in the Gatehouse we looked through for places to visit, which also had lots of helpful information eg Chemists, GPS, hospitals, vets, butchers, bakery, etc. By far the best family holiday we have had. Would definitely recommend!
From the moment we arrived the property just wowed. Everything was taken care of for us with even a New Gift for us and our 4 legged baby. Jennie was a pleasure to deal with with excellent instruction on how to find the property and everything clearly labelled inside
I had booked the Gatehouse for a family get together as a surprise for my husbands birthday. The house was perfect. The bedrooms were beautifully laid out and the beds very comfortable. The downstairs open plan enabled everyone to be together and the kitchen was one of the best equipped I have seen in a holiday home. We were easily able to cook and serve an early Christmas dinner. The hot tub was an added bonus and the small games room in the attic would be ideal for families with children. The owner was easily contactable and very helpful. We much appreciated being able to bring our dogs. I would struggle to find any fault with this property good position, clean, cosy with very efficient underfloor heating, comfortable, well appointed, beautifully decorated we especially appreciated the Christmas trees and decorations good secure garden for the dogs to play safely, even a wine fridge to keep our drinks cool. Our only tiny issue was in knowing how to operate the TV after the youngest members of our group went home but thats a generation thing and not a problem with the TV. Strangely our Jack Russell was terrified of the sound made by one of the remote controls so we gave up on that. I would definitely recommend the Gatehouse and hope to return some time next year. Thank you for a lovely weekend
Olivia
The Gatehouse is a lovely cottage. We had a girls birthday weekend here. The host is really kind and accommodating. Living area is spacious and clean and nice, the kitchen is very well equipped and bedrooms are cosy and well furnished. Hot tub was great fun. Everyone had a great time.
Highly recommend. Spotless house, great facilities, absolutely fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed by all. I will definitely return. Thank you.
Lovely period cottage, that has everything you need for a relaxing family break
The weekend is something as a family we have needed. There was a beautiful welcome hamper on our arrival. Parking for 6 cars if needed. Our journey was difficult with the weather but the owner was on hand and gave us new directions with the flood. Once we were at the house we had the break away we all needed. The house is absolutely beautiful and equipped with everything you could need. Everything had been thought about to make our stay amazing and stress free. The beds are comfy and all rooms of a good size. We had 2 dogs with us and they were catered for too There is a file with information to help with your stay. The hot tub added to our stay and the games room. This break away enabled my children, partners and my husband and I to all be together and have precious family time after the difficult year weve had. The house gave space at times to be together or space for quiet time too. The walks are beautiful and plenty to suit everyone. I would recommend this house to people and we have actually all ready. We will hopefully be able to come back if its free for our next family break away.
Chiara
Had an absolutely fantastic long weekend with friends. The property is even better than the pictures if thats possible. Clean and well maintained, plus the owners have left everything you could need for your stay, not to mention the Prosecco and chocolate gift on the day we arrived. Have already recommended to friends and family, and will likely revisit in the future.
We had a fantastic family weekend at The Gatehouse. It was a beautiful property with everything you could possibly need. Thank you!
Samantha
On our arrival at The Gatehouse our first impression was Wow what an amazing place and the location is beautiful. The garden is plenty big enough and more importantly nowhere for the dog to escape. Every room is beautifully presented. All the beds were lovely and comfortable however the downstairs bed not quite as comfortable as those upstairs. The kitchen has everything you need to cook for a family and plenty of space for sitting. Lots of lovely walks close by if you dont want to drive too far. We had an amazing stay here and would without doubt stay here again if available. Fantastic place loved it.
A gem of a property, very clean and fully equipped. Location ideal for visiting southern locations of Peak District. We stayed with our dog who enjoyed the many walks around the property. The only reason I have marked comfort down from 1010 is because the bed in the downstairs suite was not that comfortable and very creaky. This would not stop us going again or recommending the property, and we are already planning our next trip.
This was one of the best holiday cottages we've stayed in. The house was roomy, beautifully presented and was a very pleasant place to spend a relaxing weekend with friends. It was very well appointed, everything we needed was available, plenty of towels, great hot tub which worked well, comfortable beds, plenty of parking. The house was also easy to find and in a beautiful location. We would definitely consider returning.
A lovely well maintained, comfortable and equipped holiday property. Plenty of room for 8 people, with ample space for everyone. The hot tub and games provided was well appreciated, and well used. The location was great with trails to explore as well as places of historical interest. The owner's instructions were easy to follow and extremely helpful.
The Gatehouse was perfect! Could not fault it at all. It was one of the best holiday cottages we have ever hired. Brilliantly equipped, with everything you could possibly need. Great open plan living for spending time with our friends. The games roomhay loft was thoroughly enjoyed by our children and the hot tub used by all. Would definitely come back!
Amazingly looked after, a home away from home with all the little comforts! Will definitely be returning!
The Gatehouse couldn't have been more perfect for our family weekend. What an amazing property, spotlessly clean & beautifully decorated, the photos don't do it justice. There was everything needed for our weekend celebration with the Gatehouse is well equipped throughout. There are some beautiful walks from the front door and it was a real treat to come back to a warm cosy house and a fantastic hot tub. Thank you Jennie & Ian
Denise
Fantastic stay at the gatehouse, it was everything it said in the right up and more, you cannot fail but to have a great relaxing break. Would recommend it to anyone especially with children lots to keep them occupied I would give the Gatehouse 1110.
We had a fantastic time while staying at The Gatehouse. The perfect setting for a family get together. We will be looking to return at some point in the future as the setting was beautiful and the location is a perfect meeting point between two ends of the country.
We booked this beautiful home to celebrate my Dads 60th and it was perfect. The information provided by the property owner prior to our visit was so detailed and Jenny was so helpful with any queries. The kitchen was so well organised and had absolutely everything! Beautiful interior and so clean, hot tub was a fantastic addition as well as an assortment of games which my niece loved. We didnt read some of the information provided on parking before hand so we parked in the wrong spot which was our fault. Thank you
Charlotte
We had the most wonderful weekend break at The Gatehouse. The house is beautiful and has everything you could ever need. Host Jennie was very helpful and accommodating. The hot tub was also a lovely treat. Would definitely recommend!
Samantha
3 Generations stayed over new year, the house met everyone's needs, it was comfortable, beautifully decorated and had everything you could think of that you might need. The location was excellent with plenty of walks right on the doorstep. I found the Owner extremely helpful and a pleasure to deal with. All in all a great way to spend celebrating the new year.
Patricia
Lovely place with lots of thoughtful and generous touches. Super owner, very responsive. Great location with easy access to main routes for exploring. We had a Christmas family gathering and The Gatehouse was perfect for us.
Olivia
The house was beautiful. The house felt so cosy and comfortable and we settled in straight away. There was so many little attention to details the owners had thought of to make it easier to use the facilities in the house. The garden was perfect for two dogs as it was all enclosed and we knew they would be safe. The location was perfect as there was a beautiful woodland walk just down the road with a pub next too. Plenty of parking and easy to find. The kitchen is perfect for a big group of guests and had all the equipment we needed. Honestly I couldn't fault the stay, the owners were so helpful and made sure we had all the information we needed prior to the visit.
Claire
From before we even arrived at the accommodation Jennie was so helpful and went out her way in putting up Christmas decorations for us. As soon as you step inside the accommodation it feels homely, smells gorgeous and everywhere is clean. Everything you need is provided for you, the space and layout is ideal for a group of people coming together. We loved our stay and would definitely look to stay again as loved every minute. Thank You
Shelbie
Beautiful cottage in a lovely location! Lots of walks on the doorstep. The cottage was very well equipped & Jennie thought about everything that was needed! Games room was brilliant & the hot tub was perfect temperature! Amazing place! Thank you x
Jennifer
The Gatehouse was the perfect venue for our family gathering to celebrate a birthday. The house is very nicely furnished and very well equipped. The hot tub and the games room in the attic were particular favourites. The dog loved it too, with plenty of walks on the doorstep.
