Fernhill Lodge Reviews

Hannah
It is a beautiful house in a beautiful location! Easy to get to and in a peaceful spot! Hot tub and huge balcony was lovely, overlooking Carbis Bay! It is very well equipped with crockery, cutlery, etc and with most things that you would expect in a holiday let including dressing gowns, but no basic cleaning materials, no washing up liquid, no basic condiments oil, herbs, etc, no hand wash. However, the dishwasher was broken on arrival. We were phoned and told this. Engineer was there when we arrived without the correct testing equipment and then returned 4 days later, diagnosed the problem, new pump needed, said it wouldnt be fixed before we left. Still had 3 days of the holiday left. We were very surprised that parts couldnt be ordered with next day delivery. Sykes were not interested at all in trying to get it sorted with any urgency. The bottom line is that we had a lovely time, just disappointed in Sykes attitude. The house is also up for sale so they may not look at replacing it.

We had a lovely holiday. It has an amazing view of Carbis Bay and the hot tub was a lovely. Great location to walk into St Ives. We were just disappointed with the cleanliness and maintenance of the lodge. It had cobwebs everywhere, dead flies on the window ledges. Dust on the bedside lamps and shades. Toilet not flushing correctly, spot lights not working, bedroom blind broken, broken plug socket in the bedroom and the sofa felt unstable! This was all reported. The property is looking very tired and needs a freshen up, but this could be due to it being for sale.

Fabulous property, loved the view, the hot tub, open plan living area and it was so quietprivate. Well equipped kitchen but no hand wash, kitchen spray supplied. Only 30 min beautiful walk to St Ives or hop on the train in 5. We had a truly wonderful week as a couple but if house full as a 7 only having one very small ensuite and one bathroom would be a challenge. Hope to return, many thanks. And thank you for the awesome weather in October, so so lucky.
Such a great place with exceptional views over the bay. The decor inside was really lovely and modern. Within walking distance of St Ives and all the local attractions. Highly recommend.
The property is lovely, well laid out and beautiful views, comfy sofa area in living room and plenty of outdoor seating, comfortable beds and clean bedding but we felt the house is in need of a freshen up, certain areas look tired. the BBQ was old and very weathered and put us off using it, the outside cushions needed a clean, there was a screw coming out of the bottom of the bathroom cupboard, black mould along the back of the sink and the sink and the bath were marked, not dirty but marked from so much use, the fan blades were really dusty. lovely stay we really enjoyed our holiday but the place just needs a little TLC.
Great house and place to stay. Our only negative comment would be the place should have been cleaner. The outside furniture apart from the hot tub was very dirty including the cushions. The windows were really dirty and the house was ok but could have been better.
Caroline
Very comfortable well equipped property, with fabulous views. The kitchen had great equipment for cooking, the only thing missing was some mugs to drink from. Perhaps I drink a cup of tea quicker than some people but for me a cup is not big enough We heard strange noises a couple of nights and thought someone was upstairs, but after reading the guest book we saw that someone else had worked out it was the chairs on the uneven balcony surface rocking back and forth in the wind! It honestly sounded like someone was bouncing a ball on the ceiling. It didn't keep me awake but I did wonder what it was until I read the guest book. Might be worth putting something under the chair legs to even them out, or at least warn people of this in the notes so they can move the chairs at night if it bothers them only happens when it is windy. Some of the instructions in the folder seemed out of date there was reference to a separate parking area which I can only imagine used to be where the next door property now sits the description just didn't make sense we spent quite a lot of time looking for this as we had 2 cars and the turning area in front of the property is very tight. Leaving instructions were also a bit confusing the folder info said a padded envelope would be provided and to put this in a letterbox by the gate, but I couldn't see where that was, and the email instructions seemed to indicate the key should go back where we got it from in the key safe, so I just did that. The hot tub was brilliant and we used it a lot my only comment there is that it would have been nice to have a robe for everyone in the property, rather than just 4 it is supposed to sleep 7 and we were 6 adults so all using the hot tub, and in March the robes were much appreciated for those who had them! All in all, this is a lovely property in a great location, and we would return. My comments are just small points for improvement to make it even better.

Fernhill is a lovely house well placed in Carbis Bay for visiting St Ives and the whole surrounding area, including especially important for us walking the South West Coastal path. The coastal bus stop is only a few minutes walk away there is a good convenience store nearby a large Tesco supermarket is about 5 minutes drive away there is a good pub and a fantastic fish & chip restauranttake away. For more refined dining, the Carbis Bay hotel's restaurants are close by, too. The house itself is bright, spacious, clean, and has very comfortable beds. We were there for 4 nights in February and so were delighted that the heating and hot water system were very efficient. The covered balcony is a gem, even if February, when we were able to sit out, sheltered from both wind and rain. Would we go back for a longer stay? Resoundingly yes! In fact we have already booked another two weeks in June which we are very much looking forward to.
Matthew
The whole experience, from my telephone booking to the end of our stay was excellent. The person I booked with was friendly, helpful and efficient. The property was amazing, with everything you needed. Little extras make so much difference, robes, Bluetooth speakers, SKY TV and the lovely Christmas tree and decorations. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything you needed, no shortages of cutlery, plates or saucepans. Plenty of towels. I cannot praise Fernhill Lodge enough and will definitely return. I highly recommend Sykescottages as a company and the property we stayed in. We left a day early, as our plans had changed and when I phoned to inform Sykes, the gentleman on the phone was very concerned that we were OK and that there wasn't anything wrong our end That's excellent customer service. Thank you again, you have added a loyal customer, to, I am sure, a growing list.
Stephen
Fantastic holiday for all my family thank you carbis Bay .
Claire
This is a spacious, well equipped and modern property with beautiful views across Carbis Bay. It was in a great position for exploring Cornwall and the stay was very comfortable. The hot tub was a real treat after a long day of walking and exploring.
Robert
Lovely house very spacious wellequipped living area and balcony overlooking the picturesque bay. Train to st Ives very frequent, convenient and cheap we made four trips on it.
Alexandra
The house is fabulous and we had a wonderful stay spotlessly clean and kitted out to a high standard. The location is perfect 10 min walk to the beautiful beach down a lovely footpath and wonderful sea views from the house. The only thing we felt was lacking was enough clothes drying space. On a beach holiday we have loads of wetsuits, swimsuits, towels etc along with general clothes to wash and dry. The house could really benefit from a proper tumble drier and a much bigger second clothes rack. It often rained so trying to dry things on the outdoor washing line wasnt practical.
Daniel
Amazing house in a great location. Well stocked kitchen and we loved the ice maker in the fridge freezer for our cold drinks. Beds were really comfortable and it was lovely to use the hot tub to relax further. Only minor gripe was that the keys werent available on arrival they werent in the security box so had to wait around an hour for someone to arrive, just a little frustrating after a 6 hour drive.
Paying a premium rate for the accommodation you have every right to expect everything to be spot on, as the listing does not tell you there may be issues. Sadly the fridgefreezer had a fault and was allegedly to be replaced on our departure date. Similarly the hot tub had bits missing, jets not working and its location needed a good clean. I think the Owner should offer a modest amount of compensation if everything is not as you led to expect. The location is possibly second to none and overall we loved being there, little niggles apart.

We are regular visitors to the Carbis Bay and St Ives area and we have booked our last few holidays through Carbis Bay holidays. This was the first time we stayed at Fernhill Lodge and we will definitely return. The property is spacious and equipped with everything you might need. Plenty of space to park your car and a short walk to the beach. Fernhill Lodge has absolutely stunning views and the house is clean and well thought out for guests. The garden and hot tub were an added bonus especially as we were fortunate to have some great weather. We really didnt want to leave after our weeks stay and we cant wait to return again. The Shepheard family

We have recently returned from holidaying with you and booked the lodge for a relaxing week for both of us and it certainly was. The lodge was beautiful, clean and very well equipped everything you needed was there and more. It was a great base for exploring the wonderful countryside of Cornwall. The recent addition of the hot tub was a good move, as after a day of walking and sightseeing, it's lovely to hop in and relax, looking over the bay watching the lights come on one by one in the houses below. I would love return one day with my grandchildren as I'm sure they would love the house and the great beaches Cornwall has to offer. Thank you Carbis Bay Holidays for a fantastic week and hope to return sometime soon. H.Taper

We had a fabulous holiday in Carbis Bay and Fernhill Lodge provided us with everything we needed to give us a memorable and fantastic holiday! The quality of the furniture, fittings and extra touches, like the fresh flowers on our arrival, was first class. The owner of Fernhill Lodge has first class taste in fitting out the house! The house accommodated six of us comfortably. We enjoyed the balcony for breakfast every morning the view from there is truly superb! Who needs to go abroad, when you can enjoy that while on holiday! The garden and hot tub were a fantastic addition and a big hit with the whole family. L.Powell

We had a wonderful time at Carbis Bay, The house was truly amazing, everything we expected and more. The hot tub was definitely a bonus, we all enjoyed it. Fernhill Lodge was lovely and clean, very light and airy, and very well equipped, the views from the balcony were stunning. We enjoyed breakfast on the patio every morning , listening to the birds singing and taking in the lovely views across Carbis Bay. We found a lovely little pub the Cornish Arms about 10min walk from house, the food was tasty and very good value, the owners were very pleasant made us all welcome. we would recommended it highly. The local Tesco up the road was very handy for any essentials we needed. We enjoyed the lovely walk down to Carbis beach, and had a nice coffee and ice cream at the beach cafe with views to die for. The train ride into St Ives was lovely, very relaxing and again stunning views , only 4 mins journey for 1.00. In St Ives we can recommend the Alba Restaurant for something a little bit special, and the Life boat pubrestaurant for lovely food at reasonable prices. I must mention the Taxis services we used on a couple of occasions, Ace Cars in st Ives very reasonably priced, friendly. and prompt. Overall we had a wonderful holiday, and we will definitely consider staying at Fernhill Lodge again Pure Luxury. K. Claire

We can honestly say on behalf of both families that we had a fantastic time and were blown away by the spectacular views from the balcony at Fernhill Lodge. We defy anyone not to instantly relax once greeted by the view across the bay. We are sure that spring and summer would be a different and exciting experience. As for the accommodation the size and facilities were first class and the attention to detail, such as kitchen utensils and technology were always surprising. Fernhill Lodge is also a great location to explore the southern tip of Cornwall such as Lands End, Penzance, Truro etc. We certainly had a wonderful end to 2010 at Fernhill Lodge and preferred to entertain ourselves at the Lodge especially as we were able to see many local firework displays at midnight. Thank you for your attention to detail for our stay and we would have no hesitation in returning in the future and to recommending to others the value of your offering. D. Matthews
