Meadowsweet Reviews

Lovely isolated barn conversion. Excellent holiday feel and relaxed owners. Good for bird watching and on the public footpath. Drive from main road is steep and gravelly but do able with a non 4 x4 type car but worth being aware of before arrival. Suitable for family or group of friends. Thanks for a lovely stay.
Absolutely perfect. This is an amazing place to stay for a holiday. Every attention to detail has been taken. I can't recommend this lovely holiday home enough. Great as a base, but also a lovely place to chill and take in the breathtaking views from the hot tub. The owners were there to greet us. Leaving a lovely welcome hamper. They were there, but in no way intrusive.
We had a wonderful week at Meadowsweet. It has everything you need for a relaxing holiday and is tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. Owners Denise and Chris met us on arrival and were so friendly and helpful. We were also greeted with a lovely hamper of goodies! The hot tub was a lovely bonus and the surroundings are simply stunning. We have already recommended to friends and we will definitely be back again. Thank you.

Meadowsweet is an outstanding property. The views and position are simply stunning. The track down to the property we found to be well maintained, rather fun and well worth the effort. We saw Red Grouse, Red Squirrels, a Hare as well as having an incredible view of the barn owl swooping down the valley. The hot tub is a welcome addition to this well thought out and tastfully renovated property. The owners, Denise and family, were very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Casper and Olly the owners dogs were also great company, eager to play but happy to stop once told! We all fell in love with the peace and quiet lovely walks can be found without getting in your car. A highlight for us was walking to Goathland from the property and having Sunday lunch at the Inn on the Moor. The best Sunday lunch we have had. We all had a great time at Meadowsweet and would highly recommend it.
Carmen
Meadowsweet was such a lovley place to stay the views are amazing and the hot tub just finishes it off. There is everything you need in Meadowsweet like a washing machine and dishwasher. When you stay there look out for the barn owl. The family who own it are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble. I would recommend this place anytime just beautiful
Excellent, high standard property. Very comfortable beds. Lovely reclining seats on settee and hot tub to relax when when youve been for a long walk. The views from the cottage are amazing and the steam train going through the valley just adds to the extra wow factor. So much to do in local area. Denise was lovely and helpful.
Rebecca
Another excellent stay at the amazing Meadowsweet. Lovely welcome hamper of local goodies, none more local than the free range eggs from the owner's chickens. Property was immaculate as usual and the views never disappoint. Plenty of wildlife to view, from the clear view of the barn owl, pheasants, sheeplambs and cowscalves, to the resident ducks, chickens, rabbits and of course the two adorable labradors, who are always very welcome visitors. Thank you Denise and family for another wonderful holiday
Nicholas
This property is a gem. Furnished to a high standard, well equipped and nice welcome pack. Spotless throughout, comfortable beds, good heating, not that we needed it. Fabulous views, peaceful and very relaxing. Enjoyed the hot tub. Barn Owls nesting next door which were great to see. Highly recommended, would definitely stay here again.
Richard
We couldn't have asked for a better week. The property and it's location are stunning, our 2 young daughters loved the property and all the animals from chickens, dogs, cats to owls and deer roaming the grounds. Thankyou for a holiday none of us will ever forget!
Great property right in the middle of the North York Moors, within relatively easy drive of all a lot of attractions. Clean, warm, modern, comfy. Situated down 14 mile of farm track. Freakishly dark when you turn all the lights off, just a pity we didn't have a clear night to look at the stars! Would definitely stay again if we're in the area. Thanks!
A lovely cottage in an exceptional location for any walkers and steam enthusiasts! Denise was wonderfully helpful with recommendations, cottage came equipped with fascinating books to learn more about the North York Moors Railway in particular, and the hot tub after a long walk was the cherry on top.
Fabulous hosts. Welcoming, helpful, flexible and informative. The property is lovely and warm, and the hot tub well
What a beautiful cottage, it had everthing we needed, on a great locatie. The basket and fresh flowers was a nice welcome. Lovely walks nearby the cottage and the beach and nice villages are not far away. We had a wonderful stay! Thank you Denise & family, and Casper & Ozzy
We had a great stay at Meadowsweet. It is a beautifully renovated cottage and has everything you would need. The cottage was warm and cosy and the warm welcome and fresh flowers made it more special. There are lots of lovely walks from the door and great pubs for lunch. The dogs were very entertaining. Thank you, we had a wonderful time.
A last minute booking and what a gem it turned out to be. The barn conversion had been completed to a very high standard set overlooking a beautiful valley where the North Yorkshire steam trains run. The furnishings were quality. The cottage was well equipped and there was a much appreciated welcome basket. The host and indeed all the family were very welcoming, friendly and offered lots of advice on places to visit.
Duncan
We cannot recommend this property highly enough. We had a wonderful stay, the accommodation is appointed to a very high standard and no expense has been spared. Denise was a very welcoming host and was available should we have needed her. The views from the barn cottage are stunning and you are surrounded by an abundance of wildlife barn owls, deer, pheasants, rabbits to name just a few. We were also entertained by the resident ducks and the two wonderful Labrador retrievers. Lots and lots to do along the east coast, Whitby, Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay, Pickering, Rosedale, Ravenscar all visited and to end the week we had a brilliant trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Pulman dining train.
We had a great time, the owners were lovely and very helpful. The property was in a beautiful location and immaculately kept and catered for everyone, with everything we could want. Visits from wildlife and local animals, kept our children entertained. Hope to visit again and explore the woods and walks by the property. Thoroughly enjoyed winding down from a busy day at the beach in the huge hot tub! Views were fantastic and you can even see a steam train go by in the distance.
What a beautiful property in a beautiful setting. Barn was extremely clean and the hamper on arrival was lovely. Fresh eggs were a treat too! The hot tub just topped the week off as very relaxing. Thank you so much
Rebecca
Very high standard and beautifully converted barn, fully equipped with more than we would ever need the owners are onsite and happy to help if you need anything. Views are amazing, don't forget to travel on the NYMR so you can see the cottage from the steam train, to reverse the view of seeing the train from the cottage. Close to many local walks you can get all of them to lead to a good pub without too much difficulty. Managed to have a really good view of the barn owls, hares and swallows, even without the binoculars that were supplied, as well as the lambs and calves this trip. Additions onsite for 2023 include a labrador pup, who is equally adorable as his older brother. We're already looking forward to another stay
This cottage is holiday perfection. It is spotlessly clean and has everything you'll need for a break away. The views are beautiful and it's rural location makes it quiet and restful. The NYMR steam railway is is at the bottom of the valley and great to watch. We had Owls in the barn next to us which we saw nearly every day. We had a lovely welcome pack. Its a short drive to lots of lovely village's and the beauty of the Moors with loads of great pubs. The owners live in the farmhouse on site and are attentive but not intrusive. We would absolutely recommend this location and will definitely visit again
Simply wonderful. What a great place to stay with family. The house had everything you could need and has been finished to the highest standard. The hosts were incredibly accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. We would certainly stay here again and have already recommended it to friends and family. A 5 star stay.
We had a great week at Meadowsweet. We were welcomed by Denise and given lots of great information on local restaurants, pubs and places to visit. The location is amazing we loved looking out over the valley and watching the steam train travelling through. Meadowsweet was such a cosy and comfortable place to stay, with a big kitchendiner and lovely living room to relax in. Our children loved meeting the animals and playing in the field outside. The hot tub was a fantastic bonus, too. Thank you for looking after us so well.
Natalie
A spacious, comfortable and warm barn conversion in a peaceful location with stunning views and numerous marked walking trails from the cottage. The North York Moors steam train runs from Goathland Hogwarts' station and home to Heartbeat which is a pleasant country walk away through the valley. The coast, Robin Hood's bay, Whitby and Staithes are half an hours drive away. Enhanced by the wildlife, deer, hares, barn owls, pheasants and the owners ducks, chickens whose delicious eggs were amongst other treats in a welcome hamper, the cats and lovable labrador Casper who brings his toys with him when he wants to play, this was the perfect get away. Wish we'd stayed longer.
We had a great week staying in Meadowsweet barn. Fresh flowers and a welcome hamper provided with various food and drink goodies, including eggs from Denise and Tims hens. Enjoyed the hot tub with views down the valley and under the stars, and at the end of the week with snow on the ground. Plenty of places to visit and walk to, including down into the valley where the North York Moors steam railway runs in season. A great barn conversation, keeping some original features and very warm and cosy. We will definitely be back.
We all thoroughly enjoyed staying at Meadowsweet Cottage, luxouriously furnished and so warm and welcoming for our winter stay in February. It's a wonderful rural location with expansive views over the Esk valley with plenty of wildlife including deer, owls, pheasants seen during our stay along with the owners family of rabbits, hens, ducks, cats and dog to keep us entertained during the stay too. It's a real gem of a cottage in a beautiful location and one not to be missed. Thanks once again for a most wonderful stay!
This is my second stay at the magnificent Meadowsweet and I loved it as much as the first time! Denise, Tim and family have created wonderful holiday accomodation which is enhanced by Casper the dog, the cats, the chickens the girls! and the ducks. This is a holiday home for all seasons whenever you stay you can enjoy the changing seasons all around you. I've already got my 2023 visit booked!
We had a great time staying at Meadowsweet, the location and views are super as was the property which was finished to a high standard. The owners were very welcoming and quick to respond to messages. Would gladly stay here again in the future.
A lovely break away at a beautiful place. Denise & Chris were so welcoming & very helpful. Meadowsweet is a renovated grain barn and it was just fab! Lovely seeing the chickens wandering round, alongside lots of pheasants and lovely Casper the dog and Gaz the cat! The driveway is quite lengthy with potholes as previous guests have also mentioned, and steep in places too, so just go very steady up & down. We also struggled to find the cottage via the directions, but stopped at Goathland post office who pointed us in the right direction back to Goathland Church from the post office and then right at the mini roundabout past the Mallyan Spout Hotel and follow the road quite a good while, then Murkside Cottages eventually on your right, just past a forest. All in all a really lovely stay, the place was just beautiful beds so comfy too! and scenery was stunning, lovely to wake up to each morning and could see the steam train in the valley too at certain times of the day. We were also not far from a lovely little village called Egton which had a great little pub called The Witching Post Inn. We recommend! Thanks again for a lovely stay!
In a word, Perfect. Made us feel so welcome. Introduced us to all their animals. Beautiful countryside, peaceful atmosphere. Great for the soul. Stunning, cosy house, loved being surrounded by the many different sounds of the wildlife. Owners are so warming and friendly. Made us feel at home, left us gorgeous flowers in every room, fresh eggs from their own chickens and a tray of yummy treats. Had everything we needed. Short drive to the whitby beach. Big garden for the kids to play. Eldest two really enjoyed the hot tub. Couldnt have wished for a more peaceful setting for our much needed holiday. So many happy smiles. Cant thank Denise and her family enough for giving us such an amazing place to call home for the week and for all the wonderful memories we made.
Theresa
A lovely cottage in the perfect location. Very wellappointed and comfortable. It kept its rustic charms whilst still been modern in terms of appliances, facillities and features. The cottage's position overlooking the hillside and valley is used very advantageously in the design and it provides a wonderful backdrop both physically and as a view from the windows. We loved dining outside and overlooking these views. We had a couple of issues over patchy wifi connection, unavoidable I guess given the relative remoteness of the location, but they were always sorted quickly and without fuss and I suspect if we'd had any other issues that would've been the case also. The driveway is a little steep and difficult to negoiate in places and if you ever able to be in a position to change this I think it would serve the overall experience of the cottage well. One other thing that occured but didn't actually come into play whilst we were there, is the proximity of the two cottages on site to each other, with regards to privacy especially when outside. The other cottage was empty when we were there so it didn't apply, but we felt had it been occupied it would have prohibited us slightly in enjoying the outside and the garden as there was not enough of a fence seperating the two and not everybody is comfortable in sharing what is essentially a communal space with total strangers. We loved our stay at the cottage and can not speak highly enough of it.
Rachel
What an amazing cottage in a superb, peaceful location. Meadowsweet is everything it was promised to be and more. The views are stunning its a challenge to pull yourself away from them each day! Its very comfortable and everything is of quality, presented beautifully with extra little touches like a very generous welcome hamper and when we stayed, fresh flowers around the cottage. The hosts, Denise and family, are really lovely and friendly. The hens chortle nearby, the buzzards fly in clear sight and lambs baa in adjacent fields its a little haven! I would highly recommend this cottage and its definitely one of the best weve stayed in. Well be back!
Very clean and comfortable property. Beautifully decorated throughout but still feels like a home from home. Lots of little touches to make your stay even more enjoyable. The welcome hamper was full of delicious treats. Denise is a great host who is there if you need her but does not intrude. The views are stunning and the location is ideal to explore the coast and North York Moors.

The Grainary Wildlife Farm - YO25 3HS

Located in Harwood Dale Village, North Yorkshire we think this attraction makes a superb family day out and couples will also enjoy the nature walks in the area.  There are 6 nature walks in total surrounding the farm so walkers and lovers of the outdoors will be in their element. Some of our favourite walks include the Spring Flowers, Pond and Village walk which takes around 35 minutes, and the Meadow and Trees walk which takes one hour.
Flamingo Land - YO60 7EW

Situated in Malton in North Yorkshire this has to be one of our favourite family days out.  It's a theme park and zoo all in one stretching over a massive 400 acres. With thrilling rides for the very daring like Cliff Hanger, Corkscrew and Kumali, there are also more gentle rides for the little ones such as Frog Hopper and Helitoys.  Family fun attractions include the 4D cinema, the lost river ride and the Little Monsters Den of Mischief. Check out their website for seasonal events which take place throughout the year and you can also gain more information about the zoo.  Flamingo Land is a resort as well as a theme park so you can also book accommodation there.
Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary - YO12 6RP
about 15 Miles
If you are enjoying a lodge break in the Yorkshire Moors and Coast then a day trip to the Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary highly recommended. This centre is one of the regions most popular attractions and is educational as well as fun. Visitors will enjoy a journey beneath the waves, meeting many strange, beautiful and fascinating creatures of the deep. As well as mighty sharks and beautiful rays guests can get up close to some more common creatures including star fish and can also meet the otters, seals and penguins at feeding time. The site also has children's play area and picnic tables as well as a restaurant and souvenir shop. Family tickets cost £46.80 but the Tourist Information Centres in Scarborough, Whitby or Filey often offer fantastic discounts.
Betton Farm Visitor Centre - TF9 3PS
about 15 Miles
Betton Farm Visitor Centre is the ideal attraction close to the North Yorkshire coastal town of Scarborough. This animal farm has all the cute farm animals you would expect to see and will appeal to younger children especially.  A great place to both play and learn we think the Betton Farm Visitor centre is great value for money.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs.  Some of the highlights of the day might include meeting Sofie the Shetland Pony and Henry the goat, as well as the pot bellied pigs called Porky and Hammy.
Sea Life Marine Sanctuary - YO12 6RP

Located in the Scalby Mills area of Scarborough this makes a fun family day out for those who are interested in marine life. The fantastic ocean tank is well worth seeing - it's been transformed into a Turtle Reef and you can see an amazing array of colourful reef fish and coral. You may also catch a glimpse of the tropical sharks and turtles. Offering good value for money this is a day out with a difference and an all weather attraction.
Peasholm Park - YO12 6QQ

This attraction is ideal for sunny days as the beautiful park is ideal for wandering out and taking in the scenery.  You can hire boats including rowing boats and canoes to enjoy the views from the water.  The pedalos with the dragon heads are always a popular choice too.
