About Toad Mire

Toad Mire is a beautiful cottage situated 1.5 miles from the small village of Backbarrow, a wonderful retreat with an open-plan living area. Completely lake-fronted, you can expect to see extensive views from the sitting room with its glass windows and patio across the lake, and you may even spot the resident otter or swans.

Well-suited for families or friends to come together, this retreat is designed to a standard of luxury, beginning with a lounge which hosts sumptuous leather sofas, and a woodburning stove to warm those cooler evenings. White-washed walls, and spotlights in the ceiling, surround a dining table situated by the window; a fantastic outlook over the lake and surrounding woodland, as well as evidence of wondrous nature within in the Osprey painting hanging on the wall, inspired by a photograph taken by a previous guest!

The glamorous floor to ceiling windows continue round to the kitchen, which is spaciously arranged, with fabulous wood effect units, and a small breakfast area, perfect for a warm cup of tea throughout the afternoon. There are three beautiful bedrooms included, each wrapped in more enticing views, which you can wake up to every day that goes by, with an interior matching that of a hotel quality.

Exceptional extras include luxury en-suites, a hot tub overlooking the lake – perfect for stargazing in the evenings, outdoor furniture, sun loungers and a barbecue. Surrounded by woodland and thriving bluebells and more, you will look forward to opening up the sliding doors, and enjoying everything Toad Mire has to offer.

Beyond this, enjoy magnificent views across Windermere and the surrounding fells, or visit the Aquarium of the Lakes, where the naturally themed habitats bring the history of the Lakes vividly to life. Bowness-on-Windermere provides a lovely day out, and the picturesque village of Hawkshead is certainly worth a visit.

Toad Mire Reviews

Carole
I can't recommend Otter Tarn highly enough, it is the most amazing tranquil place set in beautiful surroundings. We stayed in Toad Mire the view of the lake with the fells in the background is absolutely stunning an ideal setting for our family to come together in these times of restrictions and guidelines, we had everything we needed in five star accommodation, nothing was too much trouble for the owners who are extremely friendly, helpful and approachable. We didn't want to leave. It looks fabulous on the website but actually being there exceeded our expectations.
What a delightful setting! ! Stunning location and stunning lodge with great facilities.
The cabin was lovely, really nicely decked out and all of the fixtures, fittings and amenities were of a very high standard. There was a lot of thought and detail into how it was kitted and including things like a Bluetooth speaker was really useful. The kitchen was very well equipped which was really important as we were mostly cooking at home, I can't think of any utensil or cooking equipment that was missing and there was even some tea, coffee, pods for the coffee maker and milk in the fridge when we arrived. The main sofa in the living room is huge and you can stretch out without getting in anyone's way wish we could fit one of these at home. The setting is idyllic and calming with beautiful views all around. Unfortunately we didn't catch sight of the otters but I think we'd have needed to be a bite more diligent. The site is very close to a number of small towns which had a nice variety of shops and places to eat, Cartmel and Grange we really liked. The butchers in Grange was really good and Cartmel had an amazing cheese shop. There are limitless places to go walking, running and cycling locally as well as good places to take kids for activities. An enduring memory will be the service provided by Mrs Blackett throughout she was really friendly and very quick to respond to any issues that we had. She gave us advice and insight about the area and always had a smile and a wave when we were coming and going. This was one of the nicest places we've ever stayed on holiday and we were already talking about booking again as we sadly departed on the last day.

South Lakes Safari Zoo - LA12 0LU
about 9 Miles

This is an amazing Cumbria attraction well known locally as well as nationally for how close you can get to the animals.  Described as the most interactive animal park in Europe it's well worth a visit if you are staying in the area.  Open from April to end October some of the highlights are the tigers, penguins, bears, hippos and rhinos.  At 2pm during certain seasons it's feeding time so don't forget to plan your day around this so you can watch the animals enjoying their feed.  Look out for seasonal events such as Halloween Zoo Boo (free entry for kids in fancy dress) and The Magic of Christmas.

Lakeland Wildlife Oasis - LA6 1JH
about 9 Miles
Located in the Milnthorpe area of Cumbria we love this local attraction.  With an eclectic mix of fascinating wildlife and hands on displays this centre is educational as well as fun.  You can wander around at leisure admiring the exhibits which range from chameleons to computers. Some of the most threatened species are kept at the park as part if international breeding programmes.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs which are great value for money.  There are discounts for pre-booked parties of 12 or more.
Happy Mount Park - LA4 5AQ
about 12 Miles
Happy Mount Park has attractions for the whole family including several play areas, a miniature railway, crazy golf, putting green and trampolines, there is also a paddling pool where the little ones can splash around in the summer and a café where the adults can relax with a drink. During the summer months and especially during school holidays live music can often be enjoyed.
Rydal Mount & Gardens - LA22 9LU
about 14 Miles
Rydal Mount & Gardens are wonderfully situated between Lake Windermere and Rydal Water offering breathtaking scenery. The home of William Wordsworth from 1813 - 1850 the grand home is now lived in by the poets descendents but parts of the house and grounds are open to the public. Why not take a guided tour and see the rooms where many of the famous poems were written. The gardens are beautiful at all times of the year but in the summer offer a spectacular display of colour. There is also a gallery and a tearoom. Discounts are available for group bookings.
Ullswater Steamers - CA11 0US
about 21 Miles
This is an award winning Lake District attraction and they have been operating cruisers on Lake Ullswater for over 150 years.  There is no better way to explore the lakes than on water and you could even combine a cruise with a spectacular walk.  For great days out in this region then this attraction is highly recommended and will appeal to couples as well as families.  Corporate groups are also well catered for.
Bowland Wild Boar Park - PR3 2QT
about 28 Miles
Head for the Bowland Wild Boar park and we don't think you will be disappointed.  A popular attraction in Preston there is so much to do for the whole family.  From picnics, walks and wildlife to experiencing feeding the animals you are sure to have a memorable day out.  Also popular is the kids tractor play area.  For rest and relaxation the cafe is ideal serving hot drinks and snacks with a lovely view over the pond and wildlife feeding station.  The Forest of Bowland has been declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
