West Gate Reviews

We have stayed at North farm before and as we are fairly frequent visitors to the area would choose to stay again. All the extra little touches do make it feel luxurious and the pool is fabulous. Any little criticisms are just down to personal taste e.g. the sofa is not comfortable and the cooker is not very easy to master!
What a lovely place! The cottage was amazingnice and clean and the little extras on arrival were a lovely surprise. Bread, butter, milk, orange juice and biscuits Fabulous! We didnt use the hot tub or the swimming facilities but we will next time. A curtained gazebo for privacy around the hot tub would be nice. Extra lighting outside too. I would recommend this location without hesitation. Beautiful! Thank you.
The cottage was very clean and comfortable although we did think the sofas weren't super comfy. The hot tub and and pool were great to have. Beautiful, quiet location with gorgeous views. The cottage and site were very tidy and well maintained. It would be good to have some instructions for the TV as it took a while to work out we also noticed we couldn't use Disney on it. Overall, we had a wonderful time and would recommend the cottage to friends and family.
Benjamin
Absolutely gorgeous property with stunning views. The cottage was fantastically equipped, having virtually everything we needed right down to a highchair, cutlery and crockery for our little one 19 months old. She absolutely loved seeing the chickens and ducks, going swimming and exploring the fields on site. There is so much to see and do in the local area and even more places to explore within a 30 minute drive. Bamburgh castle is a must do and the beach at Beadnell is stunning 1 hour free parking in the car park too!. Our only complaints were the mattress and sofas were pretty worn out and not the comfiest but everything else was so brilliant, its easy to look past this. We had such a lovely stay here and will definitely be back.
Shirley
We had a lovely week here. The cottage was lovely and exceeded our expectations. The log burner and hot tub were a bonus, as was the private use of the swimming pool for 5 sessions of one hour. There were some lovely touches, like a welcome pack of essentials. Despite some reviews, we found the beds very comfortable. We are already planning our next trip to the site, which has a variety of cottages available to suit different family sizes.

The cottage was well equipped, very clean and modern. The hot tub and pool were fabulous. S great place for a relaxing holiday. Sea views from the house were lovely.
Stuart
The cottage had brilliant views, a wonderful welcome pack and the whole holiday was hasslefree, except for the power cut on the last day but that was obviously beyond their control. This is the second time we have been here and will certainly not be the last. Highly recommended.
Location amazing, bathroom could have done with attention to shower cubicle going bit mouldy and vent full of dust. Apart from these we loved this cottage , the farmer mowes a path down to the beach and also the village which are both lovely walks. Bed we found comfortable but did take our own mattress topper after other reviews saying it wasnt so didnt want to chance it. Beautiful and peaceful , never tired of the views and would happily return.
Sharon
Bed and pillows lumpy. Other than that it was a great cottage, in a great location and everything we needed. Thank you
Lovely cottage that had everything we needed, cozy fire, hot tub with a beautiful view and close to places we wanted to visit. We also really enjoyed the walk down to the beach from the cottage. Just wish we could have stayed longer.
It was a nice touch to be supplied with groceries on arrival. Cottages are classed as luxury but the towels provided for use in the bathroom were small and threadbare. Also dining table far too large for the space especially as the cottage only sleeps four.
Alison
Fantastic location, clean and pleasant cottage. Wonderful swimming pool and great private hot tub. Will book this again.
Louise
Lovely home, very clean. Pool is lovely and warm which was great for our kids. Only slight niggles would be to put the gate lock code to embleton in the book clearly we walked down with a pram in the rain and got stuck! and to pop the heating on in winter before guests arrive. We spent the first hour in our coats. Would book again, thank you.
Only thing that lets the cottage down is the fact the bed linen doesnt fit the rather well used beds. Every time we turned over the bed springs were very noisy and the sheet kept coming off. Otherwise its a super cottage and facility and we intend to visit again. Thanks.
We enjoyed our stay at North Farm Cottages so much that we booked again for next year while we were still there, and thats the best recommendation we could give. The location, with the view down to the sea and Dunstanburgh castle, is fantastic and to be able to sit in the hot tub and look at that amazing view was the highlight of our stay at West Gate. The property was clean and well equipped even in the lockdown conditions, and we were lucky to have very good weather allowing us to get out and about every day, as there is plenty to see nearby. The complex is well maintained and although there are lots of cottages, in West Gate you feel very private. We also enjoyed using the pool although the rota times didnt always suit us, this may have been different if the weather hadnt been so good! The only thing people should be aware of is that although the property sleeps 4, the second twin bedroom is short on storage space and there is only one bathroom which contains the only toilet. We stayed as a couple and felt that with two more adults it would have been cramped, but with two children it would have been OK.

We are just home from a fantastic holiday at North Farm cottages. We stayed in west gate cottage and enjoyed panoramic views from the hot tub on most days. The property was very clean and had everything we needed for a weeks holiday. There was plenty to do all within a 15 minute drive. One of our party had mobility difficulties and was unable to use the pool due to the ladders being too short. However those that used the pool found it very clean and a great temperature. It was so nice to have a pool all to yourself. All of our party were able to access the hot tub and enjoyed the many walks around the location. The play park and goal were a welcome touch and our 8yr old made full use of the facilities. We will miss the great views and would definitely return for another holiday, it such a great place to visit.
This is an exceptional holiday rental in every sense. We stayed at West Gate at North Farm Cottages, near Embleton modern, very well equipped hot tub, swimming pool, lovely walk over the fields to the beach at Embleton Bay at Low NewtonByTheSea. Communication and support was excellent throughout. Perfect location for exploring the local area including Alnwick, Craster and further up to Lindisfarne. We enjoyed fabulous weather for January, too. We really can't find fault with anything this is the benchmark for quality holiday rentals highly recommended.
Really good location. Lovely cottage. Lovely to be in a complex but feel that you are quite remote. We would definitely go again.
The location was totally breathtaking. We loved the facilities especially the pool which was really lovely. The photos dont do it justice. The one thing the owners might consider is a way of guests letting other guests know when theyre not using their pool slot so they could move their slot or have longer in the pool. It really was stunning and we would love to come back in the future.
Deborah
A great place for a family holiday, loved the facilities. Only down side was most of our alts for the pool were mid day so didnt get to use it as we were out and about.
Shirley
This light, airy and extremely clean little cottage had everything we needed and we very much enjoyed our stay. However, the photographs shown online are deceptive and the living area was much smaller than we expected. The spotless hot tub was a real treat and the swimming pool, also very clean, a luxury but we did find the repeated allocation 46 of lunchtimeearly afternoon pool slots a little inconvenient and found ourselves having to forgo some of our planned excursions so as not to miss our pool time. We had expected one or two slots in the middle of the day but not so many.
Judith
The cottage was lovely and wellequipped. The sea views are fantastic and the chickens & pony kept us amused when looking inland. A longer than anticipated walk to the beach but only a short walk to the facilities in the village, including some good eateries. The only downside was the pool very limited access and often at an unsuitable time of day, unless you have small children. It also wasnt very clean long strings of hair in the pool, around the pool and in the changing facilities each time we went. Very off putting and unpleasant.
Dominic
West Gate is in a great location and the owner had mown paths down to the beach and the village, which was very useful for going walking. The property is finished to a high standard, especially the bathroom. However, it's much smaller than the photos suggest you can't open the washing machine or walk round the table without moving the sofas, and the bedrooms are tiny. Okay for a couple, but four adults would be dreadfully cramped. The sofas and bed linen are cheap and not of the quality I would expect in a selfprofessed luxury cottage. We stayed for 2 weeks and the owner said we would have to pay an additional charge to have clean bed linen after the first week! The hot tub was nice, although a windbreak would be good, and like other visitors we were disappointed to find that it cannot be used on Fridays we didn't know this when we booked. The swimming pool is lovely, especially when you have it to yourself, but we lost one of our slots because of extended servicing no apology or replacement slot offered, and we used it less than we wanted to because of the nonnegotiable allocation of timeslots, which gave us no early morning slots some properties had 2 per week, but almost all afternoonevening slots, when we had other things planned. Given that the pool was a major differentiator in our choosing West Gate, it was disappointing. We have stayed in lots of luxury properties in the UK and don't feel that West Gate compares well to others in the same price bracket, or offers good value for money. We enjoyed our holiday because Northumberland is gorgeous we used to live there and knew this beforehand, but we wouldn't go back to this site.
We were slightly disappointed with our stay in regards to use of the hot tub. We were not made aware that the hot tub would be out of use for our final night Friday when we booked the Saturday to Saturday stay. This may have changed our thinking when booking and it would have been helpful to have this information on the website.
Anthony
The view are amazing seeing right across the bay on a clear day. Also the facilitys at the cottage are epic with my little boy loving going swimming every day.
The holiday cottage was fantastic, beautiful views, well equipped to a high standard, modern but comfortable, hot tub view . ..... its amazing....the farmer who owns North Farm has done an excellent job, swimming pool total bonus, then a path down to beach over the fields and also path into town with great signposts. Perfect for families, we would definitely return.
Absolutely superb accommodation exceeded all expectations probably the best selfcatering holiday we have ever had. Views spectacular. Very clean and well appointed, a home from home. We couldn't fault it and will go back soon.
The stay at West Gate was fantastic. The cottage was immaculate and could not ask for more. It was a good location to reach out to see lots of different sights and places such as Bamburgh and Cragside to name just a few, but also there were good walks from the cottage along the sandy beaches too. There was so much to do that we did not get chance to see all the places we wanted so that we will be booking again next year
Enjoyed walking & running along the Northumberland coastline and visiting castles.
Stephen
The real test of customer service is the reaction when something isn't quite right. We notified the site staff that the two single mattresses seemed well past their best you could feel the springs through them. In less than 24 hours both were replaced. Superb service. Be aware that the new indoor swimming pool is on a rota basis each accommodation taking turns we had three slots during our week stay but the upside is you generally get the pool to yourself so feel like you've won the lottery. Overall, highly recommended, stunning location and property.
We have recommended the cottage to friends and they have booked for next year
The most wonderful cottage beautifully finished couldnt wait to open them curtains every morning to take the views in. All paths for walking so well maintained by owners absolutely no complaites
Robert
This is a lovely holiday home in a lovely setting. Perfect for a family holiday.
This was a very enjoyable cottage in a lovely area. Even though the weather was not good the cottage was excellent it was very warm and had everything you needed. Would definitely go again and I would recommend this property.
Sykes were very efficient and kept in contact all the way through. We would have no problem booking with Sykes again. We are already planning our trips for next year. We have visited Northumberland twice this year and plan to do so again next year.
Sandra
We had a fabulous week in a beautiful location with lovely beach walks. The property is new & built to a high standard and the facilities were great. There was help immediately should you need it but didn't impose at the same time.

Alnwick Castle and Gardens today are perhaps best known for their roles as Hogwarts in Harry Potter movies but have for many years been a family favourite attraction in Northumberland. The beautiful medieval castle is open to the public and during school holidays and at Christmas and Halloween a range of activities can be enjoyed including Santa's Workshop, a Pumpkin Parade, Spell Making Lessons and Owl and Bird of Prey Flying.
Cragside House and Gardens - NE65 7PX
about 16 Miles
Cragside House and Gardens (National Trust) are a popular Northumberland attraction with a beautiful stately home and gorgeous grounds to explore. The rhododendron labyrinth is a unique and fun addition to the grounds and there is also an adventure playground where children can let of steam. It is the stunning scenery that attracts most of the visitors though with many bringing a picnic for a relaxing family day out. The house itself hosts exhibits which change regularly. World of the Water Wizard is currently on display.
Conundrum Farm - EX5 3AQ
about 25 Miles
With easy access from the A1 this lovely farm just north of Berwick makes a fantastic family day out.  Follow the farm trail and meet an array of friendly farm animals.  Kids will also enjoy the indoor and outdoor play areas, pet barn and tractor circuit.  The admission fee is excellent value and you will get a free bag of food for the animals and a bag of fish food for the trouts in the fish pond. When you want a bite to eat, the licensed restaurant is the place to go with quality home cooking and a charming location in some of the converted farm buildings.
