This truly is a fabulous romantic getaway at any time of year. Heronry Cottage is a single storey barn conversion that has been beautifully finished to an extremely high standard, with underfloor heating throughout and floor to ceiling windows at the rear overlooking the beck.

The spacious open plan living, dining and kitchen area has lovely views over the beck - all the better to see the heron who is a frequent visitor - and is lavishly furnished. The kitchen is luxuriously appointed with everything you need to produce gourmet meals using the superb local produce.

The super king size bedroom has a fantastic floor to ceiling picture window and a chaise longue to take in the views, while the en-suite bathroom definitely has the wow factor with a stand alone bath and a picture window for luxurious bathing. The Heronry has all the luxury of a boutique hotel with the seclusion of a private residence.

There's a patio with seating at the front of the cottage and a further seating area down by Carwinley Beck, where you can observe the local birds and wildlife in this peaceful and tranquil spot. At night this area is illuminated, creating a fabulous spot for an evening drink after a busy day sightseeing.

The Heronry Reviews

Contacted the owner after my mother was rushed to A&E, very understanding as it delayed our start but we arrived two days later. Meet on arrival by Danielle and our situation was acknowledged and genuine, really appreciated that. The property is fantastic, spacious, the windows in the living room, the bathroom and the bedroom were pure bliss, the comfort we couldn't of been happier. We really needed to get away into peace and nature and everything that comes with it and we achieved this at the Heronry. We stay in the UK alot and this is definately one of our top places. If you really want to get away this is the place to go. If you want fast wifi and telephone signals maybe not. A great place and we will be back when we need to switch off again so it may be very soon.
Lovely property. Very large but could be so much nicer
A lovely restful stay at the Heronry. Danielle and Trevor were on hand if you needed anything but werent intrusive. Beautiful views from all rooms and so peaceful. Lots of birds to see.

The place was amazeing , really relaxing, I just found it a bit warm , I like fresh air , but couldn't have the door leading to the patio open as all the bugs would come in , maybe put a screen door up , so you can have it open without the bugs comeing in , apart from that , everything was amazeing would definitely recommend this place ,

There is a major leak in the bedroom, the window frame outside has rotted away. All the paintwork needs tidying up, this used to be a lovely place, but it has been neglected. We will not be back.
Absolutely beautiful place to stay and relax. So peaceful just what we wanted would definitely recommend
Overall it is a gorgeous property to stay at. Me and my partner stayed for 2 nights. The property does have wifi and is working but be aware that there is no phone signal within the property unless you leave the grounds and travel up the road. The scenery around is just gorgeous and the hot tub on a nighttime is magical. Overall the property was clean but we did have a problem with ants during our stay resulting in us having to spend time trying to get rid of them but could be seasonal.
Wow what a gem of a place to stay. Gorgeous setting by the river and the windows set the view off beautifully. The location is perfect for heading out to explore and only a short drive away from lots of lovely walks in Scotland.
We had a lovely time at the heronry. Fantastic location. The view from the floor to ceiling windows and the hot tub are just lovely. Some of the things mentioned in the Sykes listing are no longer available like the lighted seating area near the beck, and it needs a little bit of maintenance but none of this marred our stay. On site owners are lovely and if you need anything they respond super quick.
Guests need to be aware there is no phone signal in the property. It didn't help that the information booklet had an incorrect WiFi password. Whilst other guests have stated that the owners were easy to contact we did not find this to be the case despite knocking on the doors on several occasions. The lack of phone service also didn't help with contacting them. The property is a lovely romantic retreat for 2 but is in need of some TLC with the wooden supports by the hot tub being unsafe and the bathroom fan completely clogged with dust

Had a lovely break. Floors slippy was my only concern.
Patricia
Such a peaceful cottage. Enormous windows brought the outside into all of the rooms! Listening to the birdsong and the brook from the immaculately clean hot tub was so relaxing after a day exploring in the local area. Easy to access so many lovely places Hadrians Wall, Kielder Forest and the local walk to the River Esk. The food at the Hidden River Cafe was delicious and a riverside walk through Shank Woods an added bonus. The reservoir walk at Castle Carrock was special we rounded it off with Sunday lunch at The Duke of Cumberland it was so good that we returned for their beef pie later in the week! Thanks to Danielle and Michelle for a warm welcome and for being there in an unobtrusive way. Good luck with the barn project too.
This is a beautiful lodge that has a very good vibe when your trying to relax ... This is a beautiful lodge that has a very good vibe when your trying to relax with the floor to felling windows it somehow feels like you are living in a tree house absolutely loved this place local amenities pub shops takeaways all within a ten min drive will be looking to rebook in the winter months 1010
Wow, what a holiday. This cottage is located in such a scenic area and the views from the bedroom looking down to the river are amazing. We stayed for 5 nights and had something to do everyday. We would highly recommend driving down to ullswater as there is so much to do down there. This cottage is perfect for couples and the photos dont do it any justice to just how breathtaking it is. Would highly recommend.
This is the second time that we have stayed at The Heronry and the charm is still the same. We had a very relaxing break in a wonderful location, on a rustic property with excellent facilities. Although the barn is beginning to show signs of wear, should anything important occur, the owners are always quick to help with a friendly smile. The Heronry is a great base from which to explore the surrounding Cumbrian borders and ventures into Scotland, with the perfect place to relax in the evening. Fingers crossed we'll be back again.
The stay at the heronry was amazing. The views from each room are spectacular. Highly recommend, looking at booking again in the future.
The Heronry was fantastic. We will definitely be back for a weekend of luxury. Just sitting in the lounge watching the stream is very relaxing. The hosts were onsite when needed and very helpful for the one issue that was resolved straight away.
The hosts were fantastic and the cottage was better than expected, all the little touches made a difference and the hot tub was the icing on the cake!
Tracey
Stunning place and great for the relaxed break we needed after Christmas. everything you would need was in the cottage loved the full windows so you could look out from all rooms hot tub a great way to chill out at the end of a day Visited Gretna as we married there nearly 30 years ago
The place is beautiful, absolutely stunning in fact. The kitchen is amply stocked with equipment, the welcome tea and coffee were very well received after our long journey. We had a problem with the electric blinds that had not been charged before we arrived, and they didn't have the charger at the main house which meant one of the blinds was constantly down, which was a shame. There was also a rather large leak from the bedroom window, which meant we had to keep towels on the floor. Other than that, it was wonderful, and we were assured the roof was in the process of being fixed anyway. The bed is very soft and there is no phone reception. There are some lovely walks not far which we thoroughly enjoyed, with lots of pheasants! The hot tub was great and appeared clean, surprisingly no one seemed to walk through the woods, so it really is secluded. There was an impressive night for stargazing from the hot tub, we saw a couple of shooting stars, very nice. They supplied us with flip flops which is a superb touch.
We have just spent the most relaxing 3 nights at The Heronry and cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone wanting a quiet, recharge holiday. The owners have thought of everything, the facilities are best quality, the hot tub was outstanding, very private and even though the evenings were cool, the tub was wonderfully warm. We had intended going out and about during the day but apart from a trip to Gretna and lunch at the Gretna pub on the roundabout which was excellent value we ended up staying in, to enjoy the surroundings of the Heronry and sleeping in a huge, amazingly soft and comfortable bed each night! A really great weekend and we intend booking again as soon as we can.
The property was fantastic, the owners were lovely and welcoming. The stay was so peaceful and relaxing. The stand alone bath was exceptional. You could relax and lookout to the river and woods from the bath and hot tub. Would recommend 1010.

From the moment we stepped foot in The Heronry, our minds were blown! It is more breath taking than in the pictures. Danielle and Trevor were perfect hosts and made us feel so welcome. We cant rate better than 5 stars but The Heronry deserves all 5 and more! We definitly recommend for anyone that is looking for a calm, peaceful, relaxing retreat.
Lauren
The Heronry is absolutely stunning, and honestly the pictures do not do the beauty of the cottage justice. It is so much better in person. We had an absolutely beautiful stay and can't wait to visit again.
Wonderful accommodation, well appointed, fantastic location a great place for relaxing.
Kenneth
Had a lovely time, caught the weather just right. Thoroughly enjoyed the Heronry, such an ideal setting. Thank you.
What a hidden gem of a cottage! Photos do not do this cottage justice, the owners have spared no expense in the style and decor. The views from the floor to ceiling windows in the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom are breathtaking, the huge bath, large comfortable bed and hot tub just make for an incredibly relaxing stay. This was our first visit but wont be our last, we had a great week at the Heronary, thank you.
Deborah
Absolutely lovely cottage. We had a relaxing stay and used the hot tub every night. Theres not much going on in Longtown but talkin tarn is only 30 minutes away and is lovely. The hidden river cafe is worth a visit
Lorraine
Highly recommend! ! The pictures dont do the place justice. Its stunning inside with beautiful views, just what we needed for a relaxing weekend. Despite arriving at 2am, Trevor was there to meet us and show us around the property. It has everything you need, with lovely walks around. Lovely hosts, clean and comfortable place and the hot tub is a great extra for relaxing evenings. Will definitely book again .
Clarice
Don't hesitate to book High standards all around eg. comfort, facilities, and lovely surroundings Friendly property owner and informative about area and activities Enjoyed amazing views from lounge, kitchen and bedroom Shops and petrol station nearby
The outside of the property does not reflect the wow factor when you get inside. It is fabulous with stunning views. We had a brilliant time simply looking out of the window a lot of the time. It was awesome!
Melanie
Fab friendly owners and loved the dogs. Great cottage and had just about everything you need. Comfortable and spacious and remote. Great for a complete wind down. Loved the hot tub when the weather was kind! It desperately needs an antislip mat in the shower though, nearly broke my neck trying to shower the 1st time. We used one of our own hand towels in the end. Loved the stay and will def be recommending to everyone.
The property was beautiful , comfortable , modern , peaceful , an idyllic location and spotless clean . Danielle , Trevor , the staff and 2 dogs Bentley and Rufus were welcoming and so friendly . We travelled almost 6 hours to the location from South Wales , stayed a week and was worth the traffic jams on the M6 to get there !! We Absolutely loved our stay of full relaxation and didn't want to leave . Would love to visit again in the future . Thankyou all at The Carwinley Retreat The Heronry it was a pleasure .
Keiran

The Heronry is a beautiful lodge. The floor to ceiling windows in the living room, bathroom and bedroom really do make the most of the stunning view. The bath is amazing!!! The hot tub was lovely and secluded and the sound of the river below made it even more peaceful! The hosts were lovely and we really can not wait to go back! Oh and the bed, best nights sleep!!!
3rd time we've been there so that says it all. very friendly owners
Trevor and Danielle were fantastic in helping us getting settled the accommodation itself was beautifully laid out and so spacious. The views and the hot tub were the icing on the cake. Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery - CA3 8TP
about 10 Miles
This is a museum and art gallery in one and will suit those looking for an educational and cultural day out.  You can explore the fantastic art collection including Fine Art, Decorative Art and Textiles.  If you love nature then this aspect of Tullie House will appeal. The museum holds large and important collections of zoological, botanical and geological material. And for lovers of history there is plenty to wet your appetite here. Tullie House collects a wide range of historic materials including objects, ephemera (printed material), photographs and associated information files.  We think this museum and art gallery are excellent value for money as well.
Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre - NE48 1BT
about 18 Miles
Housing the most fascinating collection of Birds of Prey in the North East this centre is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in the Kielder Water area. Located in Falstone it's easy to get to and makes a great day out for both families and couples.  As well as seeing the amazing birds you can learn all about the captive breeding programme and the excellent work being done there.  Some of the highlights of the day might include watching a Falcon stoop down from the skies at over 100mph and admiring the grace of the Eagles, Kites and Hawks.
Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD
about 27 Miles
We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
Mabie Farm Park - DG2 8EZ
about 27 Miles
Mabie Farm Park is a firm favourite. Ideal for families with younger children ,this family oriented farm park has lots of animals to meet and also offers Donkey Rides, Paddle Boats and Slides as well as Trampolines and Bouncy Castles. Kids can run around on the Soft Play Area while mum and dad relax in the Tea Room. There is also a Farm Shop onsite selling toys, gifts and fresh local produce including cakes and jams. Seasonal activities can also be enjoyed including a spookly tea and walk on Haloween. The Farm closes for the winter on October 31st.
