Monks Retreat Reviews

Emma Clarke
We had an incredible stay at Monks Retreat! The cottage-style accommodation was charming and cosy, just what we needed. Being on a farm meant we got to meet donkeys and chickens, which was lovely. The remote setting was perfect for unwinding away from busy life. The hot tub was fantasticand we really appreciated the thoughtful cream tea the hosts left us. Definitely a peaceful escape we’d recommend!

We had an absolutely lovely stay! The cottage was cosy and charming, perfect for relaxing. The games room and hot tub were a big hit with everyone, really added something special. The peaceful location was just right, yet nearby enough to explore Devon and Cornwall. Internet was patchy but that’s pretty common around here. We’d return for sure!
Emma
This place really feels like home, with everything we could ask for, honestly.
Emma
We had a lovely stay here with our family and dog. The games room was a hit with the teensand our dog enjoyed the walks around the farm. It’s a great spot for exploring the coast-only 18 mins to Bude and some fab dog-friendly beaches. Highly recommend checking out Boscastle and the Spekes Mill mouth waterfall walk from Hartland Quay. We even saw sea lions at Hartland Point!
James
We had a lovely stay! The place is just a short drive to Bude but far enough to avoid the busy crowds. The kitchen and lounge were really comfy and perfect for unwinding. The hot tub was definitely the highlight for us in the evenings.

We had a lovely stay in this tidy little spot out in the countryside. The hot tub and games room kept everyone entertained, which was great. WiFi was a bit temperamental at times, but it didn’t ruin our trip. The owners are really friendly and nearby if you need anything. Perfect for couples, small families, or friends. There are other properties on the estate too. We’d happily come back again! 😊
Ellie
We had a lovely stay at Monks Retreat. It’s perfect if you’re after peace and quiet, really remote and calming. The WiFi and TV weren’t great, but honestly, who needs screens when there’s a hot tub and a games room with pool, table footballand ping pong? We’re just 20 mins from Bude’s beaches and a quick 10-minute drive to the supermarket. Not sure if the field is usually open, but our dog loved running around freely, especially since the weather kept the animals in the barns. Great place!
Emily
We loved this place! The location is perfect for exploring North Devon and Cornwall. Even with some rainy days, the private games room kept us entertained. The owner was super friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The fresh scones on arrival were a lovely surprise. We definitely plan to come back for another relaxing getaway soon. Truly a great find!
Emma
Great fun, would definitely return
Jamie
We spent a lovely New Year's stay at Monk's Retreat. The cottage was spotless, peacefuland just right for our family. The hot tub and games room added a fun touchand Tony was a fantastic host-friendly yet unobtrusive. It’s conveniently close to Bude and the beach for day trips, but also really quiet for relaxing evenings. We’d definitely return without a doubt. Overall, a really enjoyable break that ticked all the boxes for us!
Emma
The cottage was fantastic - super cosy and well stocked. Loved the hot tub and the games room was a great bonus. Hosts were just brilliant!
Sam
We found the location absolutely lovelyand Tony was really a friendly host! The games room was a fantastic bonus, especially since we had a couple of wet days. We made great use of the hot tub too. The accommodation is suitable for four peopleand the upstairs room had single beds along with a toilet and wash basin. The only shower was in the master en-suite, but that wasn’t really an issue for our party of three. The kitchen was functional and well equippedand the lounge was super comfy. Plus, there was free WiFi. We would definitely recommend this place!
Abby
The cottage was spotless and well equipped with super comfy beds. We had the best sleep because it was so quiet and peaceful. The hot tub was really clean and always ready for us! The owner is available if needed, but not intrusive at all. The pool table in the games room was a huge bonus. It’s excellent value for money overall. It would be perfect for 4 adults or 2 adults and 2 children. The location is just right for exploring both Devon and Cornwall. Highly recommend!
Deanna
What a fantastic cottage! We were really pleased with the warm welcome from Tony, who went above and beyond by decorating the place for our anniversary. From the moment we arrived, we felt super comfortable and "at home." The hot tub and games room were just brilliant, plus we appreciated that there wasn't a long list of do's and dont's. Thanks so much, Tonyand a shout-out to your son for the tow!
Mira
The cottage is in a quite and remote location, which was lovely and we really enjoyed that. The owner and his daughter were very friendly and welcoming. There was a tasty lemon cake in the kitchen waiting for us when we arrived! We've had a great time venturing out and about, especially after jumping into the hot tub. We also made good use of the games room, particularly on those rainy days. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend it.
Jamie
We had a really nice stay at this cottage. It's tucked away in the middle of nowhere, which was absolutely perfect for us. The cottage was spacious and just right for the four of us - two adults and two kids. The games room was a great source of entertainment for both the children and us. The owner was super friendly and even took the time to show our kids around the farm and kick a footy about with them. It was such a relaxing weekand it’s only a short drive to Widemouth Bay and Bude. Overall, a lovely place to get away to!
Lila
We really enjoyed our stay! The cottage had everything we needed and even more! The games room and hot tub were awesome. The location was perfectand the fields for our dog were a great bonus. Tony was super friendly and really helpful. We’d definitely recommend it!
Tracey
We stayed in a lovely cottage that was clean and comfortable. However, there was limited storage for clothes since there’s no wardrobe upstairsand just one mirror which made it tricky to dry our hair. The hot tub was a massive hit with the teenagers, as was the games room! It was perfect for when it rained, but thankfully we had dry weather. Just bear in mind that there’s no walking distance to pubs or shops, so we definitely had to drive everywhere. The wifi and mobile signal were pretty terrible too, so there's no point bringing a firestick. If you like staying in with a drink, it's best to take plenty of DVDs with you.
Marc
This is a lovely place to stay! It’s nice and quiet, which we really appreciated. Local attractions are easily reachable by car, making it super convenient. The location, the propertyand the host were just perfect for us. Seriously, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
Lysi
We wouldn't call this cottage a 4 star at all compared to other places we've stayed. Don’t be misled, there’s no Wifi and the 3G on mobile devices is really limited. The place feels quite tired and really needs a refreshand the rugs and carpets have definitely seen better days. We noticed a strong smell of damp in the bedrooms and bathr oom too. There weren’t any Covid policies or instructionsand we couldn’t find any local information or assistance. We left feeling really disappointed with the quality of the accommodation!
