Thompson Rigg Barn Reviews

We had the most wonderful time ! Beautiful barn with an incredible setting. We really enjoyed our stay and would 100 recommend everyone
The accommodation, area, hosts and communication was second to none. It really is in the middle of nowhere but also not far from anything you might need. The accommodation is as promised on the booking and has everything you might need and things you didn't know you needed. The hot tub was well used whilst there as there was nothing better than lying in it and looking up at the Milky Way one night, snow the second night and rain the third night, all equally wonderful. The bed was wonderfully comfy and enough wood for the log burner to keep us warm when it got cold. Highly recommend this property and we will be back.
An excellent place to stay. Beautiful surroundings and a place to totally relax and enjoy time away from the hustle and bustle of life. Alan and Helen are great hosts. Looking forward to returning at some point.
Very well equipped and comfortable. A great place to relax and get away from from it all. It was just what we expected.
3rd time we have stayed and wont be our last, amazing every time! If you want to get away from it all then this is the place to go. We take a weeks worth of shopping and dont really leave untill our holiday is over. Im usually an early riser but some days i would not naturally wake up untill 11am. The bed is huge and comfy and the sheets are amazing. There is a snug where my partner would sit and read her book with a glass of wine while I went out to explore. We would definitely recommend heading to the end of the road then over the fence into the forest for a walk and enjoy the scenery. The owners are brilliant and will engage with you and if you want to be left alone they respect that too and give you your space. The best place we have stayed so far and hopefully in the future we will be back for a fourth time. If you are used to the city life and want to get away from it all then this is the place to go.
Bonita
We had the most amazing stay. They thought of everything and great attention to detail. The location was exactly what we needed solitude. Plenty of opportunities to have walks and make friends with the donkeys. Its close enough to have a scenic drive into the local villages too. Would highly recommend and cant wait to come stay again. Thank you so much!!!!
Denise
What a lovely, cosy and very comfortable hideaway this is. We had such a peaceful and relaxing break. Alan & Helen are the most perfect hosts and super helpful. They have added lots of little touches to make the Barn feel homely and welcoming and the bed is the most comfortable bed weve slept on in any hotel or holiday cottage!
The property was lovely and the facilities were great. The hot tub was fantastic but took a long time to get to 37.5 degrees but once reached temperature was fab ! Beautiful scenery , the donkeys are so cute
Fantastic cabin, amazing surroundings the owners were lovely
Thomas
Our stay at thompson rigg barn was perfect everything was fantastic and would definitely recommend.
Steven
We stayed here for 2 nights and what can I say amazing, Alan & Helen were very welcoming and on hand if we needed anything at all, their attention to detail was spot on. This place is brilliant if you want some piece & quiet or just what to relax away from the hustle & bustle of city life. The walk in the Yorkshire Moors was so piece full, with breathtaking views this is a must when staying here.

Its our second visit this year because we love it so much and weve just booked for March next year! The barn is so cosy and has great facilities, the hot tub is just the icing on the cake and great for relaxing tired muscles. From walking out directly from the barn or exploring further afield to all that is on offer in Dalby Forest, the North Yorkshire railway line with its beautiful stations and steam trains and even to the seaside. That said, we find it difficult to leave the donkeys, sheep and chickens and are happy to just share their space, tranquility and remoteness. We feel amazing when were there and just the fact that weve booked again gives me a great sense of wellbeing. We would definitely recommend.
Thompson Rigg Barn is exactly what we needed for our week away! The barn was larger than many we have visited, has everything we could have wished for including a few games, which was great, as we forgot ours! and is beautifully situated and presented, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by dark skies we were mostly unlucky with cloud, but did see ISS, and a few stars, peace and quiet, and beautiful countryside. The drive in and out is an adventure it is necessary to allow a good 20 minutes before any real roads are reached! but, for us, this was part of its charm!! Our hosts were helpful, friendly and accommodating, and topped up the wood for the wonderful logburner, whenever required! Our main company were sheep, donkeys ever hopeful for apples!, hens, and many wild birds. Listening to the owls, while soaking in the hottub was the final touch absolutely wonderful, thank you.
Gareth
The perfect place to relax, you feel miles away from everything but there are some great days out in under an hours drive. The owners were great, welcoming and on hand if you need anything. Would recommend that you pack some extra carrots for the donkeys and that you make time to enjoy the walks locally.
We came here for our honeymoon and it was amazing! Highly recommend. There was so much to do, we kept busy but also relaxed. The farm life was lovely too everyone loves a donkey!
Vivien
We had a wonderful stay at Thompson Rigg Barn. It is a peaceful retreat but with lots of access to walks and local places to go. We went on the North Yorks Moors Railway from Pickering twice, and to Rievaulx Abbey but we also had a couple of days when we stayed around walked from the barn, The owners are really helpful if you need anything and there are some ideas on things to do places to eat and walks in the info book. We loved the friendly animals too. Would happily stay again if visiting the area.
Heather
A beautiful peaceful location well maintained. Excellent directions provided as the location is very rural. The property is lovely and well thought out with everything you would need for a great stay. Hosts were lovely, there if you needed anything but I also felt the layout afforded privacy. Highly recommend this property, very relaxing comfortable holiday was had!
A beautiful place to stay and explore the area. Numerous walks on the doorstep and the owners couldn't be more helpful. The property was first class easily worthy of 5 stars. We will be coming back.
Deborah
We had a lovely week here
Well off grid , which was just what we wanted , very relaxing week in a beautiful part of the country , lots to do roundabout if you want to travel .
Judith
We stayed at the Barn it was fab the owners were so lovely and friendly . Alan and Helen have created the most lovely place to stay . The Barn is very remote but we had visits daily from Stormy the dog ,a chicken and opposite were four lovely donkeys who loved being fed carrots. We are not walkers but Helen suggested lots of places to visit which we did.We were blessed with amazing weather we loved our stay thanks Alan and Helen.
It was absolutely perfect, a week of total relaxation. We could not have made a better choice. Both the location and the property exceeded our expectations and we hope to return.
Have had a suberb week here. The barn is of a high standard and so quiet and peaceful. Alan and Helen are very friendly and helpful with tips on the local area. Loved feeding the donkeys and had daily visits from a couple of chickens. The lovely dog came for a cuddle every morning and the cat had a fuss a few times. Would love to visit here again.
Can't rate this property highly enough the location is simply glorious, and the barn itself beautifully converted, decorated and furnished to a very high standard, with everything you could possibly need, including a bottle of prosecco on arrival! Helen and Alan are lovely people and couldn't have been more welcoming. The remoteness of the barn was just a little unnerving on the initial journey, but the directions supplied were accurate, and included photos, which were very helpful, and it was more than worth the effort when we got there. While there is no phone signal in the area, the WiFi at the barn was good, so this was not a problem. We would definitely love to visit again. Helen also kindly showed me around their new Shepherd's Hut The Hideaway also bookable on Sykes website and I would recommend that too it's lovely!
Beautifully presented and to a high standard, lovely countryside
Stephen
The barn was perfectly located, positioned deep in the countryside, it offered a feeling of peace and tranquility. The barn itself was nicely decorated and furnished to a high standard and the standard of cleanliness was also very high. Both Alan and Helen were perfect hosts and we could definitely recommend the barn to anyone looking to find a peaceful retreat that also offers a good location to visit the many highlights in and around the area.
Brenda
Totally enjoyed our stay in a beautiful barn, set in fabulous surroundings. Hosts were extremely helpful and welcoming. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys walkingcycling. Just make sure you bring enough carrots for the amazing donkeys!
Deborah
This is a wonderful barn in great surroundings . The owners provide absolutely everything you would need for your stay. There is nothing they had not thought of. The hot tub was just perfect after long walks and we loved feeding the donkeys each day . We hope to visit again soon.
Philip
Beautifully appointed with excellent facilities.
Emma C
We had a wonderful stay at the barn over the New Year weekend. We loved everything about it and have already rebooked to stay again. The donkeys, the walking, the peace and of course the hottub were all fabulous.
Our second year at the barn and just booked our third year. We have looked at other barns but nothing comes close to this place. from start to finish everything is amazing every time. absolutely amazing, secluded in the middle of nowhere, Hot tub with the tree lights on is perfect, or turn all the lights off and watch the stars at night, we went sight seeing to whitby the first year but this year decided to take advantage of the local walks especially the crosscliff walk which was amazing. there are board games, freezer, ovenmicrowave everything you need.. The owners are brilliant, and on hand if you need anything but also give you enough space to make you feel your out there alone. cant wait for 2023 and returning again. AMAZING
Thomas
Brilliant stay, perfect little getaway in the middle of nowhere. Lodge was clean with all the essentials needed plus more prosecco, beer, biscuits tea ect and logs for the fire with bundles of sticks made up to start the fire with. Hot tub was amazing with some beautiful views of the stars at night.
Michael
Let me start by saying this is by far the best cabin my wife and I have ever been to and an experience that will last a lifetime. After being caught in the middle of the stunning Dalby Forest and stranded by a freak blizzard and having to be saved by the Cabin owners Alan and Helen as well as there 2 lovely sons. We were greeted to the most serene and most beautiful winter sights we have ever witnessed. The cabin itself had everything we could have ever needed and more. The small touches such as the reclining sofa, the bean bags in the chill roof section, the bottle of wine to celebrate our wedding anniversary, even down to the coat hooks outside to hang the provided dressing gowns on for a quick retreat from the hot tub in 10 degree outdoor temperature back to the warmth of the cabin. I can honestly say there isnt anywhere better. We will definitely be going back and I would 100 recommend this gorgeous place to anyone.
Claire
Alan & Helen, the owners of this property, have created THE perfect retreat. The barn is idyllic, spotlessly clean, theyve thought about absolutely and put it in situ to make their guests stay perfect. They are approachable and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The property is remote so ensure you bring provisions with you, as theres no nipping to the corner shop or local supermarket. We had an amazing, romantic three night stay, and could happily have stayed much long. It was wonderful. We would 100 recommend Thompson Rigg Barn and we will be back.
What a beautiful place. From booking to leaving everything was perfect. The owners were so helpful and all the small detailstouches made it extra special. The location is perfect for a variety of walks and the barn is so well equipped you couldnt want for anything more. We had an amazing stay. Highly recommended Thank you
Absolutely stunning location! We booked for our honeymoon and could not have asked for a better location or better hosts! Alan and Helen were on hand and helpful from the get go, the location is perfect for a break away from the day to day noise and to enjoy the beauty of the local area! We really could have stayed in the barn for the week and not left! Whilst we did some exploring we were so happy to get back to the barn and relax! Enjoying the hot tub under the stars was a highlight as well as a well stocked fire! We look forward to coming back in the not too distant future. If you are after a relaxing and romantic break with your partner this is the place to go! You will not be disappointed!! With Love Matt & Emma xxx
Louise
The property had everything we needed and is set in a beautiful peaceful location. Helen and Alan were friendly, made us feel welcome and on hand if we needed anything. They have made Thomas Rigg barn a perfect holiday retreat. We see definitely hoping to have a return visit.
Exactly what we were looking for, an outdoors break from the congested city environment however, we did travel to york, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay. Our hosts made us feel welcome and introduced us to their abundance of charismatic farm animals. TRB is exceptional in both day and night light, the surrounding areas Insist you explore and breathe fresh air, and the night welcomes you to relax in the hot tub and stare at the night sky.
Our second visit to this wonderful barn and it was just as amazing as our first visit. A truly unique accommodation in a fantastic environment. Kevin and Karen from MidWales
