St Hilda's Cottage Reviews

Everything perfect
This is a beautiful and outstanding complex of varying properties. In a beautiful quiet location. Facilities were comfortable and clean and staff were available for advice and queries. I will be going there again to try some of the other rooms available.
Beautiful cottage. Wonderful welcome and service, showing us all the details. Lovely touches with fresh eggs and milk on arrival. Really nice peaceful location. 10 minute walk to the Cleveland Way. Bed a bit squidy for me, but that's probably personal preference. Would not stop us from returning.
Murray
Great holiday cottage. Cottage is part of a wider complex. We were well looked after and the cottage is great. Considering it is pet friendly it is in really good condition. We had a very good week here.
Amanda
The property is great with a fully equipped kitchen, large living room space and enclosed garden at the back of the property.
Loved the cottage, but if you have any form of disability this place wount suit ... Loved the cottage, but if you have any form of disability this place wount suit you, sink in bathroom to high to be able to use it properly, hand rail in bathroom badly needed, hand rails near hot tub needed as well, a roof over hot tub would be a great thing to add , this would stop bits failing in tub and give you more previous from caravan at back of garden, Debbie the owner was amazing, she couldnt do enough to help us, seanery around this part of the country amazing, some really strap hills everywhere you go so you will need to be able to walk up hills
Where to start, just got home from a fantastic holiday at St Hilda's cottage, Debbie and her staff were great couldn't do enough for you, as for the cottage, what a great location, very clean and comfortable, hot tub was a major bonus. We would recommend The Badger and Hounds for food plus only 5 mins walk away. Everything is on your door step or a short drive away. Great place and again great location, would highly recommend and hope to go back soon.
Theresa
The cottage is listed as detached but it isnt at all, and we would not have booked if we had known. Having said that, it was a beautiful, clean cottage with everything you could want . The hot tub was particularly welcome, as was the enclosed garden for our dog. Its in a lovely village with links to some great beaches. The cottage was absolutely spotless, a real home from home. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for dog friendly with hot tub in the coast
Matthew
Our stay at Hildas Cottage was lovely. The cottage is situated in a fantastic location just a 5min walk from the coastal path, and both Staithes and Runswick were easily reachable with the kids and dog in tow. The bus stop outside the cottage was also perfect for a day trip to Whitby! The village of Hinderwell has a fantastic butchers and the Badgers Hound pub served lovely food. The cottage itself is perfectly fine with plenty of room for a family of four. It is clean and comfortable with everything required to make our stay pleasant. Not to mention fresh eggs every day picked straight from the chicken pen A couple of minor criticisms are that, the decor generally appears to be dated and tired, especially when compared to the other cottages in the complex, however we knew this when booking so cant really complain. There is also a lack of clothes storage, especially in the second bedroom which had no wardrobe for hanging any of our teenagers clothes. The largest disappointment however related to the hot tub which was one of the main reasons we booked this specific cottage, which was not cleaned during our 7 day stay. This meant that after 45 days the water was simply not safe for us to use. We did raise this with Debbie who added some additional chemicals, however this had little effect and meant we weren't able to use the tub for the last 2 days of our stay. When we've stayed at other lodgescottages with a hot tub it has been cleaned on a daily basis, something I would suggest needs to be taken on board at St Hilda's?? All in all a pleasant stay, and Debbie who looked after us was truly pleasant and lovely. We'll definitely be back to explore more of the area, however truth be told, we will probably try somewhere different for our next stay.
Absolutely brilliant complex, the cottage was lovely and our daughter loved the hot tub which was clean and warm. Coastal walk literally just up the road and the local pub is amazing. You have to try the parmo's they make. Debbie was the five star element of the stay. Absolutely lovely and couldn't do enough to help. We would definitely stay again
Caroline
We have just had our second visit to this property. We love it. Debbie is fantastic she makes you feel very welcome and gives lots of great recommendations for the local area. The cottage has everything you need and more. It's impeccably clean and the hot tub is amazing. The location is fantastic to visit different seaside resorts and beaches. It's amazing if you want to take a dog en closed back and some superb beaches near by that are dog friendly especially between October to May. Debbie will go above and beyond to make your stay special fresh eggs fresh flowers are just a few of the special touches she makes. Any problems you may have she sorts immediately. We will be back love this coast line . We feel relaxed after a great week.
Nicola
Loved our stay! The cottage was much larger than the photos. They dont do the house justice! The complex was impeccable. The cute Halloween touches were brilliant tooalthough the werewolf made me double take ever time I looked out of the kitchen window
Having found the cottage thinking it would be set on its own its actually part of a holiday complex of other accommodation. The setting is lovely though and the cottage itself very clean and spacious. Really comfortable bed and the hot tub, even in October was a pleasure to use. A lovely coastal walk from the base to both Staithes and Runswick Bay, and The Badger Hounds on the high street do lovely food. Will definitely look to return if holidaying in the area in the future.
This is a fantastic property, the bed in the main bedroom is so comfortable. The hot tub is perfect for unwinding in. Everything you need for a relaxing stay is provided. Debbie on site is a perfect hostess and can provide information for restaurants, pubs & places to visit, she's a real asset to St Hilda's.
Sharon
Fabulous stay at St Hilda's Cottage. The cottage was spotlessly clean and furnished with good quality furniture, kitchen was well stocked with plenty of good quality utensils and crockery, the power shower in the bathroom was lovely and the beds where very comfortable! We appreciated the hot tub in the back garden and little courtyard in front of the cottage was ideal for evening drinks! We where made to feel very welcome by Debbie the manager and her team Kerry and Amy, nothing was too much trouble. Our young pup was welcomed too and she had plenty of space to play and run around in on the complex. We'd reccomended St Hilda's complex as a great place to stay and would like to return in the future.

24 hours after arrival before got tub hot. ..on web site detached cottage but actually end of terrace would not have booked if known...cooker filthy .no not water in bath only warm had to boil kettle several times to top it up .. And to top it off when seated in the back garden ,rats appeared from under the decking hence left before end of holiday ...very disappointing..if anyone takes any notice of these facts i hope a partial refund is offered on my 950 holiday
A great little site Staff are very friendly and helpful. property is clean well equiped only negative i found was the little garden area could do with a tidy up even a hour or two would make all the difference but its nothing to complain about really. i would revisit again we loved it so much. Debby needs a special mention she was always cheerful and greeted you with a smile and always ready to answer and questions and fix and problems we locked ourselfs out
This was far the best cottage we have ever had it was beautiful
Rachel
Absolutely amazing cottage and enjoyed every minute. The owners were so lovely and provided fresh eggs every day! We are certainly thinking of rebooking this next year!
We made a account with skyecottages especially to book this cottage after searching and looking at many in the same area. We booked this cottage as our honeymoon and the location was perfect for us , Debbie who runs St Hilda's cottage and complex is lovely and greeted us as we drove in, she gave my husband a tour of the cottage and how to work everything and said if we need anything you have my number. The cottage was always warm and cozy. Plenty of comfortable seating , my husband soon discovered that one of the chairs was a lazy boy and he was in that every evening. The beds was super comfy and we all slept well, usually I take a couple of nights to adjust to a new bed. The hot tub is amazing and going in it at night while star gazing is now one of my favourite things The garden is secure so we didn't have to worry about letting our dog out alone in while when she wanted to go out. We are hoping to re book and come back next year
Have a lovely time ,will definitely be returning and Debbie was very accommodating
Michael
We stayed in the last week of January. Cottage is exactly as described, great layout and really warm, we had to turn the heating down regularly even for the time of year. Bedrooms and bathroom all good sizes and very comfy. Free netflix on the t.v. Debbie is an excellent host, greeted us on arrival, showed us around the cottage and told us how to find all the local pet friendly eating places and places to go sightseeing. Hot tub is a bonus. Would definitely return.
Amazing cottage, facilities and location
Had an amazing weeks stay in St Hilda?s Cottage during mid November. The cottage is situated on a complex with a boutique hotel and a couple of other self catering properties and whilst we saw other residents, there was no disturbance from any noise. The complex manager Debbie went above and beyond to make sure our stay was as comfortable as possible, delivering fresh eggs during our stay and even gave us a quick tour of the hotel to view some of the amazing rooms they have on site. The cottage had everything we could ask for, 2 ample sized double bedrooms, an open plan kitchen/living room/dining area, large bathroom with a powerful shower and a very welcome hot tub in the garden outside to relax in after a day walking. There was outside table and chairs and even a pizza oven but, due to the time of year we stayed, these were unused by ourselves. The kitchen was both clean and well equipped and the living room came complete with reclining sofa & armchair and a large smart TV. The cottage is located just a few minute walk to the Cleveland Way coastal path midway between Runswick Bay and Staithes with a stunning walk in both directions. Whitby and Saltburn are both just a short car journey away. We enjoyed amazing meals out at No 20 Restaurant and The Badger Hounds, both just 2-3 minute walk but I would advise booking well in advance for both. For sea food lovers, Whitby Crab Company is just down the road in Staithes with amazing dressed crab, lobster and smoked fish and for kippers there?s no better than Fortune?s in Whitby. I?m certain we?ll be back, we couldn?t fault the cottage, location or the amazing local food choices. Finally, be aware that this property changed hands during the early part of 2021 so be mindful to disregard any negative reviews prior to this time.
Lovely cottage in a beautiful area with nice walks. Badger Hounds pub close by for good food in a nice environment. Hot tub was more than welcome and we were well looked after by Debbie

Fantastic holiday with great onsite support from the complex manager Debbie. The location was perfect and the fact that we could enjoy it all with our four legged friend made it even better.

THE COTTAGE WAS ON A COMPLEX. IT IS A GOOD BASE FOR THE AREA. VISITING THE VILLAGES AROUND AND BEACHES ETC.VILLAGE PUBS ONLY OPEN SHORT TIME. IF AT ALL. WE HAD A FEW ISSUES WITH THE COTTAGE. DEBBIE OUR HOST WAS MADE AWAY OF THEM AND THESE WILL BE RESOVLED. WE HAD GOOD BREAK .

We were a little concerned after reviewing some of the previous reviews online however we were delighted with the cottage and the service provided on site. The hot tub did have some temperature issues however the team on site resolved the issue for us and we spent time in the tub daily. It was on a lovely complex with 5 cottages of differing sizes and a house providing B & B facilities. The complex came with great support from the Manager, Debbie, who could not have been more helpful. Fresh eggs were delivered to our door every other day. Would definitely return.
Samantha
Holiday cottage is part of a complex that is not made clear in the description, the cottage on whole is clean and tidy, nowhere to store food as kitchen cupboards are full, unable to use freezer as iced up. Also believe they have a rodent problem, can hear them running around inside the walls, so many flies inside the place NOT coming from outside. Hot tub over chlorinated and pizza oven we was hoping to use over grown, fantastic position to visit the area, the lady who showed us around gave us some fresh eggs, milk and butter on our arrival, such a shame.
Leonard
Cottage was very comfortable . Advert did not do it justice very large kitchen living room.great hosts very helpful
Lovely Jubley
Excellent location, just a 10 minute walk to the coast. Cosy clean cottage. Benefit of a hot tub after many glorious walks. Well equipped and clean accommodation. Hinderwell has just what you need. 2 pubs, a chippy, butchers and tea room. Added benefit of being on the bus route. Lovely welcome basket including farm fresh eggs and locally made butter. Debbie welcoming and happy to offer advice. Definitely recommend this place.
Tabetha
Debbie the hostess was amazing and lovely local food left for us as a welcome.

Great cottage, couple of things it needs full length wardrobe or hanging space, ... Great cottage, couple of things it needs full length wardrobe or hanging space, clothes arier as no where to dry clothes, didn't realise it was in a complex this wasn't mentioned some other residents were quite noisy until early hours of morning other than that was comfy ,clean , great area to either explore or relax
Excellent accommodation that made for a fabulous break. The team were all very helpful and helped make this a special trip.
Lesley
First the cons Sykes listing says no internet which may put people off, but the internet is definitely available and effective All the rest are pro's. I did a lot of research and couldn't understand the differing reviews. Glad I gave it the benefit of the doubt. We got stuck on the motorway for hours but Debbie rang to say the cottage was ready and to give her a call whatever time we got there. She was so welcoming, friendly and helpful and greeted us with fresh duck eggs. Then we enjoyed a hot tub and a drink to relax. Yes the hot tub cover needs replacing and it was explained that it has been on order but this in no way bothered us, just mention it in case others put it as a problem. The owners are continually changing and updating the complex of farm buildings and their design and ideas are inspirational. I wouldn't agree that the cottage is tired as others have said, although it isn't pristine, it is a holiday let, but it is lovely and we really enjoyed it. The only thing missing was an ice cube tray!! There was a lot of work not intrusive in any way in the farm complex both in the other holiday lets and the boutique B &B. I had a peek at the studios Marrakesh and Rekyavik which are both stunning Marrakesh blew me away. Then had a look at the newly refurbed other lets and people are in for a real treat. All in all I couldn't have chosen better for my North Yorkshire experience, Debbie and the others were helpful and cheerful and St Hilda's cottage in the lovely village of Hinderwell was a lovely holiday.
Kieron
The cottage was very clean and spacious. It could do with a little TLC but overall cannot fault it especially for the price. The host was excellent really friendly and informative nothing was too much trouble
What a fabulous find. The cottage itself was clean and really cosy. Great kitchen space for cooking and loved the open plan. Lovely bedrooms and a huge bathroom. The hot tub was just idyllic after days walking on the beach. The garden was completely enclosed for my pooch who is an escape artist. Very accommodating hosts who had to climb over the fence after we managed to lock ourselves out. 5 minute walk from the badger and hounds which serves amazing pub food and was ultra friendly. Close to many of the east coasts best beaches so visited a different spot every day. Our only problem was that the pooch lost her wag after spraining her tail from over wagging. Thats how much she enjoyed it! Yes, a couple of kitchen cupboards are loose and there are a few carpet marks upstairs. But so what? Its a cottage that accepts dogs so wear and tear is to be expected. It was pristine in every other way. Great place to rejuvenate.
The cottage was very nice, we liked the layout, there were some minor faults but nothing to detrimental, needed a bit of TLC. The people who ran the cottage were nice friendly and helpful. very nice village and very good pubs.
Pleasantly surprised
After booking the cottage I read a really bad review so was expecting the worst ...on arrival I was overwhelmed and relieved..the cottage was beautiful ..although not detached it was spacious very clean and well equipped ..it was short of nothing ..the beds were really comfortable..the location was great ...Will definitely return but will make sure we book meals at the Badger Hounds well in advance..because of covid we were unable to eat there as it was booked up ..

Please note that some of these activities and days out are paid and it's always a good idea to book in advance to secure your place where applicable.

The Grainary Wildlife Farm - YO25 3HS
about 16 Miles
Located in Harwood Dale Village, North Yorkshire we think this attraction makes a superb family day out and couples will also enjoy the nature walks in the area.  There are 6 nature walks in total surrounding the farm so walkers and lovers of the outdoors will be in their element. Some of our favourite walks include the Spring Flowers, Pond and Village walk which takes around 35 minutes, and the Meadow and Trees walk which takes one hour.
Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary - YO12 6RP
about 22 Miles
If you are enjoying a lodge break in the Yorkshire Moors and Coast then a day trip to the Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary highly recommended. This centre is one of the regions most popular attractions and is educational as well as fun. Visitors will enjoy a journey beneath the waves, meeting many strange, beautiful and fascinating creatures of the deep. As well as mighty sharks and beautiful rays guests can get up close to some more common creatures including star fish and can also meet the otters, seals and penguins at feeding time. The site also has children's play area and picnic tables as well as a restaurant and souvenir shop. Family tickets cost £46.80 but the Tourist Information Centres in Scarborough, Whitby or Filey often offer fantastic discounts.
Sea Life Marine Sanctuary - YO12 6RP
about 22 Miles
Located in the Scalby Mills area of Scarborough this makes a fun family day out for those who are interested in marine life. The fantastic ocean tank is well worth seeing - it's been transformed into a Turtle Reef and you can see an amazing array of colourful reef fish and coral. You may also catch a glimpse of the tropical sharks and turtles. Offering good value for money this is a day out with a difference and an all weather attraction.
Peasholm Park - YO12 6QQ
about 22 Miles
This attraction is ideal for sunny days as the beautiful park is ideal for wandering out and taking in the scenery.  You can hire boats including rowing boats and canoes to enjoy the views from the water.  The pedalos with the dragon heads are always a popular choice too. Look out for special events including the Battle of Peasholm Park Naval Battle which has been described as a "must see".  You can also take a ride on the North Bay Railway which will delight children.
Flamingo Land - YO60 7EW
about 23 Miles
Situated in Malton in North Yorkshire this has to be one of our favourite family days out.  It's a theme park and zoo all in one stretching over a massive 400 acres. With thrilling rides for the very daring like Cliff Hanger, Corkscrew and Kumali, there are also more gentle rides for the little ones such as Frog Hopper and Helitoys.  Family fun attractions include the 4D cinema, the lost river ride and the Little Monsters Den of Mischief. Check out their website for seasonal events which take place throughout the year and you can also gain more information about the zoo.  Flamingo Land is a resort as well as a theme park so you can also book accommodation there.
Betton Farm Visitor Centre - TF9 3PS
about 23 Miles
Betton Farm Visitor Centre is the ideal attraction close to the North Yorkshire coastal town of Scarborough. This animal farm has all the cute farm animals you would expect to see and will appeal to younger children especially.  A great place to both play and learn we think the Betton Farm Visitor centre is great value for money.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs.  Some of the highlights of the day might include meeting Sofie the Shetland Pony and Henry the goat, as well as the pot bellied pigs called Porky and Hammy.
Castle Howard - YO60 7DA
about 29 Miles
Castle Howard is one of the regions most beautiful and historic landmarks and is located in 1,000 acres of parkland with breathtaking gardens to explore. As well as exploring the castle visitors can enjoy attractios including the unique Land Train - the best way to see the entire park. There is also a large lake offering boat trips during the summer months. In high season the site is very popular with families and offers organised activities for children including tours, talks, crafting and animal encounters. The site also has a Nature Trail which is fun for the whole family and an Adventure Playground where children can run off some energy.
Yorkshire Lavender - YO60 6PB
about 29 Miles
Yorkshire Lavender is an amazing award winning attraction offering breathtaking panoramic views of York, a Café, Plant Nursery and Lavender Gardens. The 60 acre site is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and is an excellent choice for a day trip.
