Walworth Castle Lodge Reviews

Deborah
Stayed at this property for the second time and it did not disapppoint. Extremely clean and comfortable accommodation with everything you need for a self catering break. Hot tub was fabulous and beds very comfortable. Had a delish evening meal and Sunday lunch in the castle. Staff are so friendly and professional absolutely top notch. Would highly recommend this accommodation and the castle
Excellent property but a couple of points worth mentioning. A grab rail in the shower would be useful for more senior visitors plus poor quality toilet paper is disappointing in a cottage with such high standards. Traffic noise is noticeable at commuting time, ie early morning and early evening. On the plus side a short walk to the castle for our meals was great and the staff couldnt have been more friendly and helpful. Scrummy food too.
Melanie
Excellent stay my dog had an operation and owners extended my stay. Place is fantastic and have already booked for next year.

We had a lovely week at Walworth Castle. The Lodge had everything we needed and was a great base to explore the area.
We had a super holiday in the Lodge but think that it would be beneficial to to have few more cleaning items available for use eg dustpan and brush, kitchen spray, cleaning cloths etc just to help with keeping things clean and tidy during a stay. Overall though its a great place to stay, lovely area and we thoroughly recommend it.
Hendrik
Advice go to Ikea and make sure there is enough crockery in the house. Really too little! Furthermore, lovely space but a rifle for the crows would be nice . Good WiFi in most areas of the house and on the terrace!
Had a fabulous weekend with my two friends at Walworth Castle Lodge. The accommodation is spacious, warm and comfortable, everything seems well thought out, and for us there was everything we needed although it did take all 3 of us some time to work out how to use the oven and microwave, but we got there in the end!. There was a welcome basket with cereal, tea, coffee and biscuits and even a bottle of wine All cleaning stuff was provided including dishwasher tablets. The Hot Tub was fantastic, we were so lucky with the weather. As other reviews have mentioned, a few fairy lights would be nice out there... The Hotel staff were all lovely, we had booked in for a delicious afternoon tea when we arrived, then Sunday Lunch in the restaurant was sooo good and plenty of it! All in all, we would be back there in a heartbeat...

Property was lovely very clean and tidy spacious roomy all crockery and utensils there what was needed however no cleaning g products or cleaning clothe were not to hand had to ask the house keeper for these items washing machine provided with no solution to use it . There was a lovely basket of tea coffee and biscuits on arrival with a welcome bottle of wine very nice otherwise we had a lovey break there I would stay there again

Couldn't fault it, immaculatly clean, lovely furnishings, good location, gorgeous Sunday lunch in Castle, only minor problem was outdoor lighting could have been better on the path and perhaps a few fairy lights around hot tub, we throughly enjoyed ourselves and would highly recommend.

The property was very spacious and the garden was huge. Cottage was very clean as well. Everything in the cottage was to a high standard. Hot tub was a good size. The property was in a great location and the hotel grounds were lovely. Good for dog walking. Convenient having the hotel so close by as could go to reception if we had any issues. Also could take dogs into lounge and could eat food in here. Staff at the hotel were lovely and were able to help us straight away when we needed some more glasses and cups. The housekeeper think her name was Brenda was especially helpful and she came over to help us with a few things. A couple of improvements needed....could do with some lights on the path leading up to the cottage from where the cars are as couldn't see where to go so had to use torch. Also the WiFi was really patchy and kept dropping out. Could barely load websites. There isn't much phone signal around there so 4g was useless. Could do with either signal booster or better WiFi. Could do with smaller dinner plates as the existing ones didn't fit into the dishwasher properly. Apart from those small issues we had a lovely time and we would be back.

Wow! Outstanding property and place to stay. . I would gladly live here it is that nice. Overwhelmingly spacious both inside and out.. the garden is huge .. perfect for those who take their dog everywhere with them.. a perfect stay anytime of year. Set within the grounds of the castle this is also beautiful with staff friendly and dogs also welcome. This place is just amazing in every way, just perfect inside and out...nothing bad about this property. I will definately be back.
Very comfy and felt like home from home. The dogs loved the big garden and any staff member i came across during the stay was very helpful and lovely. Nothing was ever too much hassle for them.
Lovely holiday home everything you need is provided and large enough as we were ... Lovely holiday home everything you need is provided and large enough as we were a party of six adults a welcome basket with wine and snacks is a nice touch staff are very helpful and friendly very good base for visiting local attractions will definitely be visiting again

Thankyou again for a lovely family holiday, 5 adults and 2 children and 2 dogs this was our 2nd stay and everything was great, the welcome pack was great, all clean throughout and everything you could need, lots of storage, lots of space for the children to play and they loved being able to walk up to the park and to see the sheep & the hot tub was great We had some nice trips out to beamish and to the railway museum near by. Hope to book again soon
Beautiful house to enjoy a relaxed holiday. Everything you need is here and all top quality. We had a great time and the family loved the hot tub. The garden is lovely to chill in and a 2 minute stroll to the hotel should you not want to cook. Well go back for sure, loved it

We absolutely loved our time at the Gatehouse so much so we booked to go back in ... We absolutely loved our time at the Gatehouse so much so we booked to go back in September, the staff at the castle are wonderful nothing is to much trouble for them, we ate at the castle quite a few nights the food is amazing and cost reasonable, the hot tub is a complete bonus and the regular maintenance superb all in all cannot recommend the gatehouse enough its exactly what my husband and I needed
After reading some of the reviews for this cottage we were a bit apprehensive. Well we shouldn't have been, it was wonderful! The cottage is just as it says it is in the write up. Very, very comfortable, every convenience that you would need. It was very warm and cosy. The welcome basket was a lovely touch too hubby appreciated the bottle of wine! We would certainly recommend this lodge and if we're up this way again would definitely stay.
The lodge is beautful, the surroundings are lovely and we much enjoyed our short stay. The accommodation was very elegant and suited our party 6 adults and one infant very well. There was plenty of room to relax and gather together. The kitchen was large with plenty of room though we did struggle with the controls for the oven! We did not use the hotel facilities for meals as we had a small child, but enjoyed the Lodge's hot tub and the multiple rooms with TVs. Our small granddaughter found plenty to do with the small children's play area in the grounds and she visited a local soft play park and separately a small farm shop and play park, with a llama, goat, shetland pony and donkey and a play park, plus good coffee shop. Perfect for a morning outing. The hotel staff were friendly and very helpful and responded quickly to our few requests for high chair and more towels. We arrived early and the Lodge was not quite ready, but we had a teacoffee in the hotel before being taken to the lodge and shown around. Our only regret was that the weather in february was cold and blowy so we did not use the spacious garden and garden furniture for eating outside. Overall a lovely break much to be recommended.
Ive just spent a week at the cottage and I never give feedback but I really feel this needs it, especially for the cost of a week here. First thing no one really wanted to show us around as they seemed to be in the middle of sorting a wedding but a lady did in the end. No welcome pack with info such as how to work the over complicated appliances. We had stayed in the smaller cottage 2 yrs previous and had a welcome hamper and the manger call on us twice to make sure all ok but nothing this time. The place was freezing I pointed this out the the guy sorting the hot tub his reply was if no one tells us we cant fix it I was telling him but it never got looked at all week. So here are the good points and things I think could be improved on Good Location, castle grounds, size of the property, hot tub and generally well equipped in the kitchen and large garden. Needs work on Welcome packInfo Soap in toilet More outside lighting at the front, we had to use a torch to get to the cars. Black bin was almost full when we arrived so we had to leave bags next to the bin which must have looked a right state. Heating needs looking at and one of the radiators in the TV room didnt work at all which was pointed out to the maintenance man and a electric heater was provided!. They all need bleeding as some are hot in just parts. The fire makes an absolute racket when its windy and it doesnt even work it just makes noise and causes a draft. We called the castle to sort the fire out but no one knew how to fix it so we were given 2 more floor heaters! Its only by reading reviews on here we can see this isnt a new issue. Needs a really good clean not just a dust and vac I put my hand down the side of the sofa to find the tv control and the sofa was full of food and wrappers. I had to move the dinning table to get a childs toy and oh my god the state of the floor under the table its not had a proper deep clean for a long time. Shower in the master bedroom runs hot then cold just a bit of a nightmare. If both showers are on the master shower seems to suffer and the water pressure is like a drip. Were just really disappointed with some of these things and Im very unlikely to revisit or recommend which is such a shame. I could go on as the list is endless but the main issue are above.
Christopher
The castle gatehouse accommodation was well presented and clean with a private garden and hot tub which was well maintained. Apparently there were problems with the tv broadcast due to the tv transmitter burning down but that wasnt the hotel's fault and was easily fixed by autoretuning the tv. The small issue I had with the wifi was quickly and efficiently sorted out. Shame the hotel were'nt serving lunches during our stay. The bar and reception staff were very helpful and pleasant.
Steven
Although the lodge was quite comfortable we were very disappointed that there was no welcome pack, not even soap! On the surface it was clean but there were spiders webs under the kitchen top units and when we went to sweep the floor the brush was filthy! The hot tub and garden are fantastic, very safe for dogs. The staff at the castle were very helpful and provided soap and other essentials when we asked. It is very remote and definitely not walking distance from any pubrestaurant apart from the castle itself. It felt over priced for what we got but, that said, there were only 2 of us and a dog, if you were sharing cost then it would be reasonable. If you want total chilling out youd love it.. but if you want to explore then expect a lot of car time.
Maureen
7 of us and 2 small dogs have just stayed for the week and we have had the best time, everything was fresh, clean and just what we wanted, the hot tub was amazing, we read some reviews and was a little worried but honestly its one of the nicest and well equipped places weve stayed. We had so much room , we needed somewhere that was wheelchair accessible and this was great, really made our stay a lot easier , theres a nice park at the hotel for the children too, we hope to be back next year 1010 from us, thank you for a lovely stay! Plus we needed a sun brolly and the hotel brought us one they couldnt of been more helpful
The heating temperature was set too high at night time. The microwave was too high Accommodation was spacious and comfortable
We had aged parents with us and none of the sofas or chairs had high backs for comfort Kitchen facilities were below what we would expect, no gravymeasuring jug or any jug at all, no roasting dish, lack of glasses, no large glasses and not enough juice glasses, only 4 available. We are used to a welcome pack, which there was none and would have liked more info in book about the castle and area around. The hot tub was not lit up at night, only 2 small lights next to tub lit. Staff were friendly and helpful Wasnt happy about the really, really late check in time, 5pm! Which I believe was the usual time not amended due to COVID
When we arrived the hot tub was not available as the previous occupants had contaminated it and it had to be thoroughly cleaned. Also the Wifi was not working when we checked in and was repaired that day but the Wifi does not extend to the bedroom areas and was a little sketchy in the main rooms at times. When the wind blew there was something in the fireplace that flapped around and made a funny noise. On the plus side there was a huge big fridgefreezer and smart microwave. Beds were lovely and comfortable. Plenty of space and nice garden area. Lots of storage in the bedrooms. We had a nice welcome from the hotel staff, but on departure the receptionist couldn't have been less bothered with the point we made about the recycling and didn't even ask if we had had a nice time or if everything had been ok.
Stephanie
Amazing holiday cottage. So much space and with 2 living areas it was perfect for spreading out. The hot tub was lovely and our dog loved having so much room in the garden. The garden was secure for our little dog but probably wouldnt be for bigger dogs. For us the mattress was to firm and there was a few parts of the cottage that needed a bit of tlc but we will definitely be back
Lovely peaceful relaxing week in very pretty surroundings. Enclosed garden with hot tub was great for our grandchildren and very small dog. Added bonus was two lounges with television for the evening if the family wanted to watch different programmes after being in the hot tub or just relaxing in general to read and just chill. Would definitely return again. Housekeeping and hotel staff were very friendly and helpful.

The accommodation was lovely clean, well appointed and very comfortable. Most impressive was the fact that a Christmas tree had been put up for us! The property was slightly lacking in cooking equipment and often rental properties have a store of books and board games, not to mention condiments in the kitchen, but there were none at the Lodge. Just an observation but worth bearing in mind if you are visiting this property. Hotel staff were very helpful and pleasant. We ate twice in the 1189 Bar and Kitchen during our week whilst the food was satisfactory and again the staff were pleasant, this was probably the maximum as the menu was quite limited. Information about the environsshopping etc would have been useful if held in the Lodge.
Disappointed to find the summer house as gone when we arrived, very clearly advertised when we booked sometime ago and not advised it had been taken away? The hot tub was cold the first day and required us to clean it before using, then couldnt use it due to to much Chlorine being put in, reported this but advised simply to wait until it had subsided which was less than ideal with our young grandson. The cleaning of the house left something to be desired, we hoovered the floors on arrival as the kitchen area was covered in dog hairs from previous occupants I assume. Kitchen is lacking on some basics essentials such as decent frying pans, measuring jugs and lots of little things needed for cooking. One major thing missing was plastic cups or glasses for the hot tub? Surely from a safely point of view it a must? Overall the place is very nice but in need of some attention, leaking conservatory roof, conservatory door locks impossible to use, windows leaking water everywhere. Mould around the windows and curtains etc which was a worry with our young grandson around. I think the house has an issue with water pressure as showers would run hotcold when ever other taps run etc. Overall a really nice place which just needs some attention to the detail to make it so much better.
You cancelled my booking we were very lucky the gate house was still available but you still sorted the booking when I rang up from reception. Big thank you for that. Regds . Alan
Sylvana
Location and hot tub perfect, brilliant kitchen but lacking in utensil's, pans, glasses etc.
Beautiful, well finished lodge in beautiful surroundings with the castle hotel available for use, with very helpful and friendly staff. We all enjoyed our stay very much thank you. Just a couple of small things that would have been a benefit, a shelf in the wardrobe of the twin bedroom and a key lock outside the front door. There was a very noisy bracket on the chimney when the wind got up, just a little annoying. We were surprised that our dog was allowed in such a lovely place, thank you, he loved it too.
A fantastic cottage that exceeded our expectations. It is a bit like a Tardis, much bigger on the inside than it looks from outside. We had a fabulous holiday and would highly recommend this cottage. The staff at the Castle were great answering any queries we had and we felt reassured that they would respond quickly to anything required. A note for the future the wifi is not brilliant that did not detract from our holiday but it may need looking at for people who want better access to it.

Lovely place to stay, and with the hotel on site a bit of a bonus. Lots of space for us to relax in, shame to go out and explore really. Hot tub was a definite bonus after walking around all day, certainly missed since coming home.
Victoria
Wonderful place to stay very high specification, spacious comfortable, staff at the castle were lovely, highly recommend the food, perfect place to stay, garden and hot tub amazing! Barbecue would have gone down a treat, problem with WiFi engineer was sent out promptly which sorted the problem, if I have to be critical, the washerdryer needs replacing took far to long on the wash cycle as did the dryer,I would certainly to again and highly recommend this beautiful house.
Eileen
We had a fantastic time at the lodge it is nicer and more spacious than the page shows . .the best bathroom we have had in any of the stays with Sykes over the years The lovely staff could NOT have been more helpful any of the small issues we had were sorted the grounds are lovely and very well kept and the lodge is well furnished lovely kitchen smashing main bathroom hot tub and the two lounges are handy if more than two people are staying. lots of places to visit without having to travel far Bowes castle ..Raby castle Shildon railway locomotion Redworth hall birds of prey to name a few please don't hesitate to book this lodge .you will not be disappointed .

Big Sheep - EX39 5AP
about 19 Miles
This is a recommended day out for families with young children visiting the Bedale area of Yorkshire.  Visit the farm and receive a warm welcome as well as a guided tour.  You will have the chance to bottle feed the lambs, bath a pig and handle some of the smaller animals.  Kids will love the big sandpit and the outdoor play area. There is also a cafe and indoor play area for when the weather is not on your side.
Lightwater Valley - HG4 3HT
about 26 Miles
Situated in the Ripon area of North Yorkshire this popular theme park makes a fantastic day out for the whole family.  The more daring will love the big and thrilling rides such as Raptor Attack, The Ultimate and Trauma Tower.  For the little ones there are some excellent attractions such as Flying Camels, Dodgems and a Magic Wheel.  Toddlers will like the Dragon Boats and the Lightwater Express amongst other things. There are over 40 rides and attractions in total and we think this is excellent value for money too.  If you book your tickets in advance online you can save even more money and beat the queues.
