Sonya's Cottage Reviews

Brilliant cottage in a brilliant location and with lovely friendly owners on site. Loved every minuteaspect of our week's stay.
Sonya's Cottage was the perfect stay for our family of four. Just enough space, well equipped, quiet and peaceful but close enough to many things to fill our week. The hosts were perfect, around and friendly but not intrusive. Plenty of parking close to the cottage to pack and unpack. Showers were brilliant! Kids loved it, we loved it. Couldn't recommend enough.

We loved our short break at cosy and comfortable Sonya's Cottage which sits just next to the water in peaceful and beautiful surroundings filled with birdsong. Our hosts and their dog and cat were friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed exploring the area by car which is ideal for walkers and cyclists too.
A lovely cottage let down by the very poor internet connection which was dropping in and out all the time. This should be mentioned in the listing.
Absolutely beautiful cottage, immaculately clean, so comfortable and everything you could possibly need for your holiday. The views are amazing, so peaceful. Ideal place for a lovely relaxing holiday. Owners are lovely, very helpful giving information on the local area. Hot Tub was lovely, very clean. Unfortunately l was unable to use it as l found it was quite slippy underfoot as you got in it, as l am recovering from a broken leg and knee replacement surgery l was rather hesitant to get in, however, my friend enjoyed it very much. All in all a lovely few days at Sonya's Cottage and will definitely recommend.
Lovely cozy well maintained cottage has everything you need including iron, ironing board and heating even during summer lovely hosts too big thanks to Phil, Naomi, Barny and the cat whos name l cant remember. Highly recommended.

We will definitely be returning. A beautiful cottage in a beautiful setting we were looking for a restful week and achieved that. Very friendly hosts Thankyou.
Bridget
Stunning location and lovely cottage, with owners who were welcoming and friendly. We had a fantastic stay enjoying walks, cycling, birdsong and the amazing views. On the doorstep of the Lake District but so much more peaceful and calming.
Lovely cottage friendly hosts and amazing views
We were really pleased with our choice to stay at Sonya's cottage. The cottage was spacious, comfortable, wellequipped and beautifully maintained. Waking to the wonderful and changing estuary view and sounds of birds was lovely. The location was fantastic and we really enjoyed exploring the local area and beyond. The owners and their pets were friendly and helpful.

Beatrice
The cottage was lovely, extremely clean, comfortable and well presented. Important things for us, fabulous showers, peace and quiet, amazing views and it was cosy and warm on the colder days and nights. Perfect.
I chose possibly the worst week for a walking holiday on the Solway coast with Storm Isha and Storm Jocelyn leaving me only one day without galeforce winds and lashing rain, and two days in which it was unsafe to leave the cottage. It was not a total disaster because this cottage was so comfortable to be stuck in. A genuinely wellequipped kitchen area sharp knives!!, comfortable sofa, comfortable bed, a really good shower, in general things that were solid and didn't fall apart. I was impressed that neither the electricity nor the wifi was affected by the storms. One minor thing as in almost all holiday cottages and B&Bs I've stayed at, there wasn't enough light in the main room to read comfortably by. An Anglepoise or similar would have made all the difference.
We had very relaxing stay at the cottage. ..it was well presented, clean, with very nice view to the estuary, had all you need for stay....lovely friendly owners, who made an effort to put real xmas tree and lights to make it looks festive....also dog and cat who visited us every day. Village is very quite but plenty of pubs and cafes short drive away. 100 would recommend to stay...for ones who likes cycling it has cycling route in area...
Lorraine
The cottage was clean, well equipped, comfortable and cosy. The views were incredible.
Very friendly hosts and great views from the cottage for a relaxing break. The cottage was very comfortable and cosy. Useful information provided about the local area which is great for walking and cycling.
Sandra
We had a lovely stay at the cottage, very happy with the view, the comfort and the facilities. The owners were lovely too!
Catherine
Sonya's Cottage is lovely and comfortable, and a delight to stay there. It is attached to the owners house but still feels private. Chances are you'll be greeted by Oscar the cat and Barney the dog before you meet anyone else. It's a peaceful place to stay and exactly what we wanted.
Michelle
We had an amazing stay, would 100 recommend to others and will be definitely be returning in the future. The owners were so welcoming and the wine and chocolates were a lovely treat. The cottage had loads of character with amazing views of the estuary and the fells in the background. Evenings were spent either paddle boarding on the estuary or relaxing in the hot tub after a long day walking in the lakes. We made some amazing memories on this holiday and was so pleased with our stay.
The cottage was spotlessly clean, well equipped and very comfortable. The view was beautiful and it was incredibly quiet and relaxing. I wish the view could have been seen more from the seating area inside the cottage. The welcome gift was a lovely touch. We had a lovely few days and have come home feeling very chilled.
A lovely rustic cottage with all the mod cons. Beautiful view from the patio. Quiet but a good location for exploring Cumbria and south Scotland. Clean and warm. Super owners. A gem of a cottage to visit.
They were very friendly, welcoming and helpful, especially when we all lost electricity on Wednesday. This is clearly a continuing problem for their supply company, who had to instal a generator not, apparently, for the first time.
What a lovely holiday! Anthorn is quiet we love peace & quiet and out of the way, but stunning, the cottage beautiful and the property owners welcoming and helpful. Being disabled, we could not have wanted for more. Will certainly return to this corner of heaven. Thank you, Naomi & Phil.
What a lovely cottage, perfect view and very comfortable, we enjoyed talking to the owners who made us very welcome. We rarely go back to a property twice, but this cottage we would.
Sharon
What a beautiful place! The cottage was amazing and had everything we needed. The surroundings were amazing, so peaceful and tranquil, just what we needed to recharge our batteries. Definitely going back x

Comfy sofa and bed and spacious walk in shower. Location is super peaceful with virtually no traffic passing. Views lovely. On clear night's the stars are amazing sat in the hot tub which is a wonderful touch of luxury. Host are friendly and helpful. We aim to return in the future.
Josephine
I would like to thank the dodd family for a wonderful 5 night stay. We were more than happy with the cottage and appreciated them putting up christmas decoration and a tree. you will go a long way to find a better view from the sitting room So thank you very much. We went to watch the birds but they had decided to move off somewhere else but that is something non of us have control of. Did find them across the other side of Solway Firth wonderful
Thank you for looking after us on our break in your lovely cottage and I hope the Guinea Pigs are all doing well! Hopefully, we will be back again some day, to enjoy the peace, relaxation and great views.
A beautiful spot, with lovely accommodation, just ideal x
Pamela
This was my second visit to Sonya's Cottage which is in a delightful position, overlooking the Solway. It is ideal for birdwatching at this time of year, with stunning views of thousands of waders and geese from the house and patio. The cottage is lovely, well furnished and very comfortable with a lovely hot tub. Naomi and Phil are very welcoming and helpful and I enjoyed our chats. I had a great week and have booked again for next year.
Nathan
We went for 2 nights highly recommend this cottage it is lovely
Lovely cottage and equipped with everything you need. Good powerful showers too. Great for relaxing on patio or in hot tub. Cottage is quite warm so if you prefer it cooler might be best to take a fan with you. Plenty of close by places to eat.
This was such a beautiful cottage and an even more beautiful location! It was just what my friends and I needed. A little bit of silence. Phil and Naomi were great hosts too! We will definitely be back!
Robert
Sonia's cottage was a really amazing place for a relaxing holiday. Away from hustle and bustle of everyday lives. Also not to far to drive to Gretna Green the lake district and hadrians wall. Or just chill out in the hot tub and watch the wonderful wild life.
Michael
Excellent property with great facilities. The owners were friendly and on hand for a chat to explain things about the area.
This beautiful cottage is a must for an idyllic relaxed atmosphere, and to top it off we had the experience of a hot tub jacuzzi which definitely adds to relaxation after a good day walking in the surrounding countryside. The owners are really lovely people who made us very welcome. Hopefully we will return in the not too distant future. Allinall, Excellent!! Ken & Karen

Just what we needed, home to home comfort. Beautiful surroundings, very remote location, fresh air, bird singing. Hot tub is amazing. Well equipped kitchen, clean chilled cosy atmosphere. We loved it and hoping to be back soon!
Daphne
A lovely time in a lovely place. And with lovely property owners right next door! Thank you Naomi and Phil good luck with future plans.
Fantastic cottage with everything you need in a very beautiful place. Good location for seeing the coastal area, and top side of the lakes. Great hosts who chatted with us daily.

Please note that some of these activities and days out are paid and it's always a good idea to book in advance to secure your place where applicable.

Found a special day out near your cottage? Please let us know and we'll add it so that other visitors can enjoy it too!
Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery - CA3 8TP
about 12 Miles
This is a museum and art gallery in one and will suit those looking for an educational and cultural day out.  You can explore the fantastic art collection including Fine Art, Decorative Art and Textiles.  If you love nature then this aspect of Tullie House will appeal. The museum holds large and important collections of zoological, botanical and geological material. And for lovers of history there is plenty to wet your appetite here. Tullie House collects a wide range of historic materials including objects, ephemera (printed material), photographs and associated information files.  We think this museum and art gallery are excellent value for money as well.
Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD
about 15 Miles
We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
Mabie Farm Park - DG2 8EZ
about 16 Miles
Mabie Farm Park is a firm favourite. Ideal for families with younger children ,this family oriented farm park has lots of animals to meet and also offers Donkey Rides, Paddle Boats and Slides as well as Trampolines and Bouncy Castles. Kids can run around on the Soft Play Area while mum and dad relax in the Tea Room. There is also a Farm Shop onsite selling toys, gifts and fresh local produce including cakes and jams. Seasonal activities can also be enjoyed including a spookly tea and walk on Haloween. The Farm closes for the winter on October 31st.
Castle Douglas - DG7 1TJ
about 27 Miles
We also recommend a visit to Castle Douglas and the Treasure Hunt Treasure Trails. These treasure hunts are great fun for the whole family and are an entertaining way to explore a new town or village. Children will enjoy solving the clues whilst learning about the history of the area. The walking trail is suitable for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs so no one is left out of the fun.
Ullswater Steamers - CA11 0US
about 28 Miles
This is an award winning Lake District attraction and they have been operating cruisers on Lake Ullswater for over 150 years.  There is no better way to explore the lakes than on water and you could even combine a cruise with a spectacular walk.  For great days out in this region then this attraction is highly recommended and will appeal to couples as well as families.  Corporate groups are also well catered for.
